Frustration growing after Seahawks stumble on defense

It’s early but there is some clear frustration starting to show with the Seattle Seahawks and it has to do with a defense that is underperforming

Still sore Homer (ribs) is still really sore Monday according to head coach Pete Carroll, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.

Impact Homer suffered the injury in the team's 27-23 loss to the Falcons on Monday. How much time he may need to recover is still up in the air, but he'll work to return in time for Week 4 against the Lions. If he is unable to suit up, then DeeJay Dallas will likely see an uptick in snaps.

Won't return against Falcons Homer has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Falcons after suffering a rib injury, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Impact Homer suffered the injury early in the game and managed only one rush for seven yards prior to exiting. It's possible that Rashaad Penny or Deejay Dallas steps into Homer's role as the primary receiver out of the backfield.

Impact Homer led all Seahawks running backs with 22 offensive snaps while Rashaad Penny (20) and rookie Kenneth Walker (12) trailed close behind. The Seahawks played from behind nearly all day, so Homer's usage in the passing game came in handy. He ended up out-pacing Penny and Walker in terms of yardage, too. It will still be difficult to trust Homer on a weekly basis as long as Penny and Walker are healthy.

Totals 48 yards Homer rushed five times for 44 yards and caught his lone target for four yards in Thursday's 27-11 preseason loss to the Bears.

Impact Homer's highlight of the evening was a slashing run where he broke at least four tackles and gained 33 yards, which was perhaps the play of the game. He led the team in rushing while fellow running back DeeJay Dallas led the team in receiving with four catches for 52 yards. Homer is more effective than Dallas as a runner and a pass-blocker, though, so he likely still has the edge in the competition. The duo may be battling for an increased role in Week 1 if Kenneth Walker (hernia) isn't ready.

Homer is the superior pass blocker and appears to have the edge in the competition with Dallas for the No. 3 running back spot, though neither player will have much fantasy utility as long as Penny and Walker are healthy.

Competing for third-down role Homer is expected to compete with DeeJay Dallas for a third-down role following Tuesday's report that Chris Carson (neck) will retire, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.

Impact After the Seahawks picked Kenneth Walker in the second round of April's draft, Homer might have been on the roster bubble if Carson managed to gain medical clearance for the start of training camp. However, with Carson now out of the picture, Homer has a much better chance at securing a spot on the roster. Homer is a skilled special-teams player and the Seahawks' best pass protector, while Dallas is considered the better receiver of the two. It wouldn't be surprising for either Homer or Dallas to run away with the third-down job outright, but neither player will be much of a factor on the ground as long as Walker and Rashaad Penny are healthy.

Impact Homer mostly played on special teams this season. Both he and DeeJay Dallas rarely played on offense; Chris Carson (neck) and Alex Collins (abdomen) handled most of the reps through the first 11 games while Rashaad Penny hit his stride over the final five games. Head coach Pete Carroll doesn't seem to trust either Homer or Dallas with a consistent role, meaning both running backs will likely face competition in training camp if Penny walks in free agency and Carson isn't 100 percent for the start of the 2022 campaign.
