Six free agents Bills should target after their roster shakeup

After Buffalo cut several veterans in salary cap moves this week, here are six solid and affordable free-agent options who fit the bill.

Cleared to play vs. Steelers Johnson (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's wild-card round game against the Steelers.

Impact Johnson was a limited participant in all three of Buffalo's practices heading into the postseason, but Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 reports that the running back has cleared concussion protocol. Johnson, Leonard Fournette and Latavius Murray are all options to spell starting running back James Cook, with Johnson profiling as the youngest and shiftiest of the three depth options.

Impact Johnson was evaluated for a head injury, and the tests revealed a concussion. He won't return to Sunday's game, so Johnson will finish the regular season with 30 carries for 132 yards, as well as seven catches on as many targets for 62 yards and a touchdown. Johnson will have to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol to suit up in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Impact Johnson did catch three balls -- one for a touchdown -- in Week 11, so it's not like the team views him as a one-trick pony. He's still behind James Cook and Latavious Murray in the pecking order, plus Damien Harris (neck) could eventually return before season's end, but it's at least worth noting that Johnson has been given an opportunity in the offense after previously not seeing more than one offensive snap in any game under former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who was fired after Week 10. With interim OC Joe Brady now in charge, Johnson has seen 24 offensive snaps over the past two weeks. While Johnson still is too far down the pecking order to consider using, he's also probably just an injury or two away from having a meaningful role in an offense that can put up a high number of points.
