Schefter deemed the lack of a flareup as "mild encouragement" and noted that the star running back's return will be dependent on how he fares in practice while also citing a source indicating that McCaffrey could return as soon as Oct. 20 versus Kansas City. Schefter further suggests the possibility that San Francisco could opt to sit McCaffrey out through the team's Week 9 bye in order to give him an extra week of recovery, so an actual target date for a return remains very hazy. Jordan Mason will continue to start at running back for the 49ers for as long as McCaffrey remains out.

Kalia Davis - Activated off IRThe 49ers activated Davis (knee) from injured reserve Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ImpactThe 49ers designated Davis to return from IR on Wednesday. He was a full participant in all three practices this week, but he is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. If he does play, Davis will provide rotational depth at defensive tackle behind starters Jordan Elliott and Maliek Collins.

ImpactGross-Matos was unable to practice all week after injuring his knee in Week 4 against New England. The injury appears severe enough to warrant a multi-week absence for the 2020 second-round pick. Gross-Matos will be forced to sit out for at least four regular-season games, and the earliest he can return is Week 10 against Tampa Bay. Robert Beal will serve as the 49ers' main rotational edge rusher behind starters Nick Bosa and Leonard Floyd.

Trent Taylor - Elevated from practice squadThe 49ers elevated Taylor from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ImpactTaylor will be elevated from the practice squad for the first time this season. He'll provide depth at wide receiver and as a kick and punt returner if Jacob Cowing (shoulder) is unable to play Sunday against the Cardinals. Taylor played in all 17 regular-season games for the Bears in 2023 and tallied 188 punt return yards.

Chad Ryland - Elevated ahead of Week 5The Cardinals elevated Ryland from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ImpactRyland was signed to the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday to provide insurance in case Matt Prater (knee) is unable to play Sunday against the 49ers. Prater was able to practice Friday as a limited participant, but if his knee injury prevents him from suiting up Sunday, Ryland will serve as the Cardinals' kicker. Ryland went 16-for-25 on field-goal attempts and connected on 24 of 25 extra-point tries with the Patriots in 2023.
