Sent to waivers The Panthers waived Grier on Tuesday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Grier, a 2019 third-round pick, wasn't able to beat out P.J. Walker for the backup gig behind Sam Darnold. The 26-year-old is coming off back-to-back impressive preseason outings, so it may be that the Panthers are hoping to bring him back via the practice squad. Of course, another team could interrupt those plans by claiming Grier off waivers.

Scores on ground Grier completed five of seven passes for 47 yards and rushed three times for 22 yards and a touchdown in Friday night's 34-9 preseason win over the Steelers.

Impact Grier played behind Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker, with the latter's 5-for-10 night for 83 passing yards most relevant as Grier competes to serve as the former's backup. Although his passing performance wasn't too different from Walker's, Grier surprised with a rare 24-yard touchdown scamper to begin the fourth quarter. After two straight impactful showings, it'll now be interesting to see whether Grier has done enough to unseat Walker for the No. 2 job ahead of Carolina's season opener against the Jets.

Although Carolina managed just three points, Grier had a couple connections of over 25 yards to rookies Chuba Hubbard and Terrace Marshall. His efficient play contrasted teammate P.J. Walker's 1-for-8 passing outing, tightening the competition to serve as Sam Darnold's backup going into Friday's exhibition finale versus the Steelers.

Impact Grier watched P.J. Walker start for the Panthers and finish with 161 passing yards and a touchdown in the first half. Walker also left with Carolina winning the game, only for Grier and the team's reserves to muster just three second-half points. As it stands, Grier seems firmly behind Walker on the depth chart, but has two more preseason outings to push to become Sam Darnold's backup.

No game time in second season Grier did not play a snap during the 2020 season, as P.J. Walker was preferred to him when the Panthers were without starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Impact Grier, a third-round pick in 2019, made two appearances as a rookie, and even though he and Walker alternated being active over the course of this season, Walker ultimately got the call to play when Bridgewater was out. Looking ahead to the 2021 campaign, despite Grier remaining under contract, it appears unlikely his situation will improve as long as he remains in Carolina, as both Bridgewater and Walker also are due to return, and the team could always sign or draft another signal-caller during the offseason.
