Placed on injured reserve Pelech suffered an upper-body injury Friday and was placed on injured reserve Saturday, according to the NHL media site.

Impact Pelech was injured during his second shift of the game early in the opening period versus Ottawa, and did not return. The Islanders went with five defensemen the rest of the way in a 5-3 victory. Pelech has three assists, 15 hits and 28 blocked shots in 16 games this season.

Impact Upon finding an open lane, Pelech fired the puck at the net and teammate Kyle Palmieri squared up at the doorstep for the deflected goal. It wasn't the prettiest way to get his team on the scoreboard, but between the helper, three blocked shots and four shots on goal, Pelech ended up with a fairly strong fantasy performance. The top-pairing defenseman has five goals, 14 assists and a plus-15 rating through 52 games.

Impact Pelech's third-period tally was the last goal in the game, as the Islanders' comeback effort fell short. It was his first goal since Nov. 26, and his first point since Feb. 9. The 28-year-old defenseman doesn't generate a ton of offense, and his 15 points in 41 outings this season is not that different from the 28 points he logged in 78 games a year ago. Pelech has added 55 shots on net, 62 hits, 68 blocked shots, 32 PIM and a plus-12 rating in his usual top-four role in 2022-23.

What might concern the team more is that even though on the season Pelech has a rating of plus-10, over his previous 12 games, since returning from a head injury, that rating is minus-2. While the Islanders don't rely on much offense from Pelech, they do need him to be a strong force in his own zone, especially with the team dealing with multiple injuries to their offensive corps.
