Impact While not the goal explosion we are used to from Matthews, he did pick up two assists including one on the power play to start the third period. The 26-year old added four shots, one hit and a minus-1 rating in 23:04 of ice time. In his last five games, Matthews only has one goal and three assists to show for it. The recent slowdown in goals shouldn't be a major concern. He's still generating points and his shooting talent suggests a return to top goal-scoring form very soon.

Impact The goal was his 55th of the season, which made him the first Maple Leafs player to ever reach the 55-goal mark multiple times in their career. Matthews put up 60 goals in 2021-22. And he is the only active NHLer with multiple seasons of 40 even-strength goals (44; 2021-22).

That ended a two-game drought for the NHL's goal-scoring leader, which is the longest the 26-year-old has gone without lighting the lamp since late November. Matthews has delivered 14 goals and 22 points in 15 games since the All-Star break, and he's pulled away in the race for the Rocket Richard Trophy with 54 goals in 61 games on the season -- nine tallies ahead of second-place Sam Reinhart.

It was Matthews' league-leading 53rd goal. He's 13 goals ahead of second-place Zach Hyman, and he's on pace to tally more than 70 goals. Only two players in history -- Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy -- have scored goals at faster pace than Matthews, who has 351 goals in 538 games (0.65 goals per game). With luck, Matthews could challenge the Great One atop the all-time goals list.
