ImpactHis tally midway through the third period sent the game to overtime, and when the extra five minutes couldn't settle it, Mittelstadt came through again by beating Igor Shesterkin on the backhand for the decisive strike in the shootout. The 24-year-old center has three goals in the last two games and 12 points (three goals, nine helpers) in the last eight, and if the Sabres somehow squeak into the playoffs, Mittelstadt will go down as one of the main reasons why.

Devon Levi - Keeps playoff hopes aliveLevi turned aside 26 shots in regulation and overtime and four of five shootout attempts in Monday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.
ImpactIt was a precious two points for the Sabres, who refuse to go away in the race for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Levi has been instrumental in the team's late surge, going 4-1-0 in his first five NHL starts with a 2.89 GAA and .908 save percentage -- not exceptional numbers, but a step up from what Buffalo had been getting in net prior to his debut. With three more games remaining on the schedule, including a back-to-back set to close out the season, Levi seems likely to start at least two of them as the Sabres try to muscle aside the Penguins and Islanders to get into the playoffs.

Igor Shesterkin - Bounced by Buffalo in shootoutShesterkin stopped 37 shots in regulation and overtime and three of five shootout attempts in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Sabres.
ImpactThe 27-year-old netminder continues to gear up for the playoffs, although Shesterkin came up a little short Monday against a Buffalo team fighting for its life. Since the beginning of March, Shesterkin has gone 11-3-1 with a 1.98 GAA and .934 save percentage, and with last year's Vezina Trophy winner back in peak form, the Rangers figure to be a tough out in the postseason.
