ImpactMacEwen made his first goal as a Senator count, as he gave his team a 2-0 lead with a blast from the top of the faceoff circle midway through the first period. The journeyman grinder is on his fourth NHL team in six seasons and has bounced in and out of the press box, but he's done his job when he's been in the lineup for the Senators, amassing 27 PIM and 21 hits in 13 games despite averaging less than six minutes of ice time a game (5:39).

ImpactThe 26-year-old blueliner added two shots on net, two PIM and a plus-2 rating to his ledger in his first action since Dec. 2. Chabot missed 12 contests in between due to a leg injury, his second lengthy absence of the season, but Sunday's performance is a strong sign he's 100 percent and already back up to game speed. He's only played 10 games so far in 2023-24, but Chabot has contributed six helpers, 28 shots on goal, 20 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating.

Anton Forsberg - Busy in Sunday's winForsberg made a season-high 45 saves in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Sabres.
ImpactIt was the first time this season Forsberg has faced 40 or more shots, but the veteran netminder rose to the challenge, and the only puck to get past him came after an Ottawa turnover set up Tage Thompson for a scoring chance late in the first period. Forsberg had given up 13 goals on 80 shots over his three prior starts, but Sunday's stellar performance allowed him to escape December with a 2.68 GAA and .920 save percentage through six outings.

ImpactHe spoiled Anton Forsberg's shutout bid late in the first period by converting a Senators turnover in their own zone. Thompson is heating up, delivering three goals and six points over his last five games, but he still remains behind his breakout 2022-23 pace with 21 points through 28 contests on the season.

ImpactThe Senators' final goal was scored into an empty net. Buffalo out-shot Ottawa 46-31 on the night but Levi got out-played by Anton Forsberg in the opposite crease, although the young netminder really only had a clean look at one of the pucks that beat him. Levi continues to have ups and downs in his first full NHL season, and through eight outings in December he posted a 4-2-1 record with a 2.95 GAA and .900 save percentage.
