Sean Monahan Sets Up Rookie Joshua Roy For His First Career NHL Goal

Impact Roy made his NHL debut after being promoted from AHL Laval on Friday. He entered the lineup for the unavailable Josh Anderson (lower body) and mostly skated on a line with Sean Monahan and Joel Armia. He also played on the second-unit power play. A scoring machine in junior hockey -- 97 goals over 121 games the previous two seasons -- Roy had 12 goals and 18 assists over 34 games as an AHL rookie. It's unclear if Roy will remain up with the team when Anderson returns.

The 20-year-old has 12 goals and 30 points through 35 games as a rookie as an AHL rookie this year. Over his final two QMJHL seasons, he racked up 97 goals and 218 points in 121 games. Roy could make his NHL debut as early as Saturday against the Oilers.

Developing nicely Roy has 25 goals and 34 assists through 36 games for the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL.

Impact Roy, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, continues to develop after leading the league with 51 goals and 119 points in 2022. He's played on both of Canada's gold-medal winning junior teams, including stints on a line with Connor Bedard, the consensus No. 1 prospect in this year's draft. "He's a jack-of-all-trades," said Team Canada coach Dennis Williams. "He's done it all for us. He's been good on the forecheck. He's been good tracking. Good on the walls. Making plays offensively with his good skill set and finishing off plays." It's likely just a matter if time before Roy gets an opportunity with the rebuilding Canadiens.
