Cayden Primeau - Notches first win Primeau made 27 saves in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win over the Red Wings.
Impact Making just his second start of the season, Primeau probably wanted another crack at Detroit's tying goal in the third period -- a sharp-angle shot from J.T. Compher that caught the netminder slightly off the near post -- but Cole Caufield bailed him out in OT. It's Primeau's first win of 2023-24 and just the fourth in his NHL career over 23 appearances, but as long as Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault are healthy, work will be hard to come by for the Habs' No. 3 goalie.

Alex Newhook - Joins top line, adds helper Newhook had an assist over 17:59 of ice time in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win against the Red Wings.
Impact Newhook found himself on the top line after Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis reconfigured his top six. The move worked immediately, as 10 different Canadiens had shots on net in the first period, including Mike Matheson's goal off a feed from Newhook. It was the first time in seven games the Habs scored first. Perhaps the new line assignment and unlock Newhook, who had three goals over the first three games but none over 10 subsequent contests.

Cole Caufield - Buries game winner Caufield scored a power-play goal in overtime of Thursday's 3-2 win over Detroit. He added three shots on net and two hits to his line over 21:00 of ice time.
Impact Caufield finished matters when he was perfectly set up by Mike Matheson. It was Caufield's third overtime strike, which snapped a five-game run without a goal. When not on the power play, Caufield skated on the second line, as Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis broke up the duo of Caufield and Nick Suzuki in search of sparking the team, which had lost four straight.

Nick Suzuki - Remains hot in win Suzuki scored a power-play goal and had a power-play assist in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win against Detroit. He added four shots on net and one hit over 22:32 of ice time.
Impact For the second straight game, Suzuki struck for a power-play marker. The captain's slow start has given way to a scorching scoring stretch. He has goals in three straight games and five over the last seven, during which he also has four assists. Of note, Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis broke up Suzuki and Cole Caufield at even strength. Caufield, who scored the game winner in overtime, was moved to second line in an effort to spread out the team's offense.

Impact Matheson was reeling following a stretch during which he was minus-6 in losses to the Blues and Lightning. He began the bounce-back night by sniping Montreal's first goal as a trailer off a feed from Alex Newhook. The 29-year-old blueliner is up to 10 points (seven on the power play), 40 shots on net, nine hits, 28 blocked shots over 13 games.

Impact Primeau will make just his second appearance of the season as the Habs continue to rotate through all three backstops. In his prior outing, the 24-year-old Michigan native gave up four goals on 33 shots (.879 save percentage) in a losing effort versus the Devils. Even if Primeau puts together a strong performance, he will likely continue to see limited opportunities as long as all three goalies remain on the roster.
