Impact While coach Sheldon Keefe wouldn't confirm that Hughes will be in the lineup versus the Wings, the fact that both Hughes and Brett Pesce (lower leg) led the post-practice stretch Wednesday would see to indicate that the duo will be back in action Thursday. In order for Hughes to play, he will need to be activated off injured reserve, a move that likely will see Daniil Misyul relegated to the press box as a healthy scratch.

Impact While it's not yet clear whether Pesce will suit up against the Red Wings, it's encouraging that he'll accompany the team on the road trip. Keefe said it's at least fair to say that Pesce will play over the weekend, so even if the defenseman remains out Thursday, he could return to action Friday against the Islanders or Sunday against the Ducks. Pesce and Luke Hughes (shoulder) also led the Devils during Wednesday's post-practice stretch, which should give increased optimism that Pesce could be available Thursday.

Impact Lazar got on the scoresheet when he set up linemate Nathan Bastian's third-period tally. The 29-year-old Lazar looks to be cemented in a fourth-line role, and the bulk of his statistical production will come from hits. Through nine contests, he has a helper, six shots on net, 26 hits and four PIM while averaging 11:22 of ice time.

Simon Nemec - Notches power-play helper Nemec logged a power-play assist, two shots on goal and a minus-2 rating in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Lightning.
Impact The helper was Nemec's first point in nine outings this season. The 20-year-old defenseman is fortunate to still be in the NHL, but that may not last much longer since Luke Hughes (shoulder) and Brett Pesce (lower body) are nearing their respective returns. Nemec has added nine shots on net, 10 blocked shots and a minus-2 rating while seeing third-pairing minutes and some power-play time.

Nathan Bastian - Lights lamp in loss Bastian scored a goal on two shots in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Lightning.
Impact Bastian has two goals in his last three games. The 26-year-old winger has filled a fourth-line role this season, so stretches of offense like that are unlikely to be the norm. He's at four points, 11 shots on net, 10 hits and an even plus-minus rating through nine appearances. Bastian's biggest contributions usually come in the form of hits.

Jack Hughes - Breakaway goal thing of beauty Hughes delivered a goal and added two assists in an 8-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
Impact Hughes gave the Devils a 1-0 lead on a breakaway at 11:02 of the first period. He flew in at Andrei Vasilevskiy at warp speed and went backhand-forehand before ripping it into the open net. Hughes has eight points (two goals, six assists) in nine games thus far, and is slightly off his plus point-per-game pace. It may be as simple as the trip overseas that has affected his game so far. Expect a Hart-quality season from the middle Hughes brother.

Jake Allen - Night to forget Allen allowed eight goals on 37 shots Tuesday in an 8-5 loss to the Lightning.
Impact What's there to say? The same was tight in the first, but the wheels fell off the team in the second. They picked it up a bit in the third, but it wasn't enough. This was a sleep on it and let it go night for Allen. He can't win them all.

Timo Meier - Three-game, six-point streak Meier scored two goals Tuesday in an 8-5 loss to the Lightning.
Impact Meier extended his point streak to three games (two goals, four assists). The Devils played well enough in the first and third, but they were on their heels almost all of the second period and never recovered. Meier has nine points (four goals, five assists) in nine games this season, and he looks super comfortable in red and black.
