Impact Rust was on the ice for the morning skate Wednesday but has been officially ruled out. Since his placement on IR was retroactive, the 32-year-old winger can be activated as soon as he is ready to play. Once given the all-clear, Rust should reclaim his spot on the first line with Sidney Crosby. Until then, Anthony Beauvillier and Drew O'Connor will flank Crosby on the right and left side, respectively.

Erik Karlsson - Good to go for Opening Night Karlsson (upper body) said that he's good to go for Wednesday's Opening Night matchup against the Rangers, Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports.
Impact Karlsson dealt with an upper-body injury throughout training camp, but the team had sustained optimism that he'd be available for Opening Night. The 34-year-old confirmed after the Penguins' morning skate that he'll be able to suit up against the Rangers. During his first season in Pittsburgh last year, Karlsson logged 11 goals and 56 points, including 17 on the power play, while averaging 24:16 of ice time.

Impact Ponomarev will almsot certainly be reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton once he is cleared to return to action. The 22-year-old Russian played in two NHL games last year for the Hurricanes, tallying one goal, one assist and one shots while averaging 9:41 of ice time. While he could earn a call-up from time to time, Ponomarev should see the bulk of his time in the minors this year.

Blake Lizotte - Placed on IR Lizotte (concussion) landed on injured reserve Monday.
Impact Lizotte's designation for IR shouldn't come as a surprise considering he is out indefinitely after sustaining a concussion. Even once medically cleared, the Minnesota-born winger is far from guaranteed a spot on the Penguins' roster and could find himself heading down to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
