Impact Tufte was in contention for a roster spot following a strong preseason, though he'll ultimately begin the year with AHL Colorado if he clears waivers. The 25-year-old Tufte has played in 13 NHL games in the past two seasons, tallying his lone goal in 2021.

Impact Tufte positioned himself well to claim a spot after scoring a goal in all three preseason games in which he's appeared. Depth scoring is an issue for Colorado, and Tufte's offense is a boost to his chances. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar tried Tufte at center earlier in camp -- the team wants extra options down the middle -- but the coach acknowledged the experiment did not work well and moved the forward back to the wing. The 6-foot-6 Tufte, selected 25th overall in the 2016 Draft, is coming off his best professional season in 2022-23, when he scored 19 goals in the AHL.

Impact Ryan Johansen, who is pegged as the second line center, moved to up the top line while Nathan MacKinnon was in Halifax, where the Mooseheads retired his jersey. The 6-foot-6 winger lined up with Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin and didn't look out of place at the new position. Colorado head coach Jared Bednar acknowledged a hole down the middle and said he'll look at multiple options to play center on the bottom six. "If he has the ability to make a move into the center position, I'd like to experiment with it because I like him as a player," the coach said. Tufte, who has played 10 games at the NHL level over the last two seasons while with Dallas, has an opportunity to earn a more permanent gig for the Avalanche this season.

Joining Colorado organization Tufte signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Avalanche on Saturday.
Impact Tufte made three NHL appearances with the Stars last season, and he had 35 points in 63 games with AHL Texas. He'll now take his talents to Colorado, where he'll likely serve as an organizational depth winger with AHL Colorado for most of the 2023-24 campaign.
