Losing playing-time battle Shea was scratched for Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over the Ducks, the 10th time in 12 games he's sat out.

Impact Shea remains in the NHL as a seventh defenseman, but he's behind Jack St. Ivany on the depth chart for a third-pairing job. In his two appearances, Shea has a minus-2 rating, two shots on goal and five blocked shots. The Penguins' defense hasn't exactly been a standout group so far, but Shea has minimal upside on offense -- he produced just one goal and no assists over 31 regular-season outings in 2023-24.

Snags two-way contract Shea agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with Pittsburgh on Monday.

Impact Shea logged 31 regular-season games for the Penguins last season, recording one goal, 17 shots and 24 hits while averaging 12:37 of ice time. With the club also going out and getting Matt Grzelcyk in free agency, the 27-year-old Shea will be hard-pressed to make the Opening Night roster -- though he could challenge John Ludvig (wrist) or Jack St. Ivany for a spot.

Impact Shea had a goal, 24 hits and 24 blocks in 31 contests with Pittsburgh in 2023-24. Assuming he clears waivers, Shea can be sent to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the squad's playoff run. The 27-year-old has provided two goals and six points in 22 outings with the minor-league club this campaign. The blueliner can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Impact Shea started all nine April games during the Penguins' last-gasp push for a postseason spot, seemingly earning the trust of the coaching staff. Impact Shea has played in four straight games for the Penguins in which he recorded one goal on two shots, three hits and three blocks while averaging 14:17 of ice time. If Shea isn't able to get to the arena in time, it would likely mean a return to the lineup for John Ludvig, who hasn't played since March 30 versus the Blue Jackets.
