Tyler Bertuzzi - Opens camp with Marner and Matthews Bertuzzi has opened training on the Leafs' top line with Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner, reports the Toronto Sun.
Impact It's early and things always change as camp progresses. But Bertuzzi's ability to dig the puck out and then crash the net to hammer in rebounds is the perfect style for his high-skill line mates. The trio has been skating at the practice facility over the past few weeks, but Thursday was their first public appearance together at camp. "I want to create space for those guys, bring energy," Bertuzzi said. "(Net front), that's where I'll be." Toronto media has already started calling the line the MAT Pack. The 6-foot-2, 200 pound winger's fantasy value will be the highest it has ever been if this gig sticks.

Nicholas Robertson - Active for training camp Robertson (shoulder) skated with the Maple Leafs' second group Thursday to begin training camp, David Alter of Sports Illustrated reports.
Impact Robertson was given a six-month timeline to return after undergoing shoulder surgery in January, so it's not a surprise he's back in action. It doesn't appear he'll have any limitations, so the 22-year-old winger will have a chance to win a job in camp. Unfortunately for Robertson, the Maple Leafs boast one of the deepest forward groups in the league, so he'll likely start 2023-24 with AHL Toronto unless he puts forth a really impressive performance. His main competition for playing time will likely be Noah Gregor.

William Nylander - Pivoting to center to start camp Nylander will open training camp at center, reports the Toronto Sun.
Impact Nylander, who was a pivot as a teenager, has mostly skated on the right wing in the NHL. But the Leafs need a center with Alex Kerfoot gone, and the position would give both the Leafs and Willie more flexibility. "I told Sheldon 'wherever you want me, I'm happy,' " said Nylander, who is eager to give it a try. "Maybe I get the puck more in the middle, but on wing maybe more breakaways." To start camp, Nylander has been skating with Max Domi and Calle Jarnkrok, and that trio would stretch the Leafs' offense across three offensive-minded lines.

Ilya Samsonov - Feeling ready for 2023-24 Samsonov (neck) took part in Thursday's practice and is feeling good ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, per David Alter of Sports Illustrated.
Impact Samsonov missed the final two games of Toronto's playoff run because of a neck injury and battled shoulder issues during 2022-23. He feels like he's in better shape than he was last season, though. Samsonov had a 27-10-5 record, 2.33 GAA and .919 save percentage in 42 regular-season contests last year.

Simon Benoit - Suffering from back spasms Benoit missed Thursday's practice due to back spasms.
Impact Benoit is regarded as day-to-day, so it's possible he'll resume practicing in the near future. He recorded three goals, 10 points, 60 PIM, 216 hits and 128 blocks in 78 outings with Anaheim in 2022-23. Benoit signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Maple Leafs over the summer.
