Connor McMichael - Bags apple Saturday McMichael tallied an assist and added three shots during Saturday's 5-3 home loss to the Devils.

Impact McMichael found Tom Wilson in the slot for Washington's third goal, but it was not enough to get the Capitals a win in their home opener. The 23-year-old appears to be locked in to a top-six role alongside Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson and will be given every opportunity to top the 18-goals and 33 points he notched in the 2023-24 season.

Dylan Strome - Bags two apples Strome tallied two assists -- including one on the power-play -- and added four shots during Saturday's 5-3 home loss to the Devils.

Impact Strome helped the Capitals get off to a quick start and looked comfortable playing on the top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and newcomer Andrew Mangiapane. The 27-year-old has eclipsed the 60--point barrier each of the last two seasons and should be in line for another solid campaign -- though new arrival Pierre-Luc Dubois could challenge him for top-line duty if Strome struggles at any point.

John Carlson - Notches two points Carlson tallied a power-play goal, an assist and four shots during Saturday's 5-3 home loss to the Devils.

Impact Carlson opened the scoring off the draw of Washington's first power play of the season. The 34-year-old notched 10 goals and 52 points during the 2023-24 season and should be in line to lead Capitals defenders in points again this season-- though the arrivals of Matthew Roy and Jacob Chychrun should help the Capitals spread the ice time around more evenly and help keep Carlson fresh as the season wears on.

Charlie Lindgren - Surrenders four in loss Lindgren turned aside 28 of 32 shots faced during Saturday's 5-3 home loss to the Devils.

Impact Lindgren was victimized in particular by the Devils' third line of Stefan Noesen, Erik Haula, and Paul Cotter -- who were responsible for three of the five goals the Capitals surrendered. The 30-year-old enters the 2024-25 atop the depth chart after Washington sent Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois in the offseason, but he will need to find his footing in order to fend off Logan Thompson for starts after the latter had a solid showing during the preseason.

Matt Roy - Leaves game with injury Roy won't return to Saturday's contest against the Devils due a lower-body injury.

Impact Roy appeared to catch a rut in the ice and stumbled as a result. The 29-year-old played one shift after that incident, then exited the game. The right-shot blueliner is in the first year of six-year contract signed with the Capitals in July. Expect an update to come on Roy ahead of Washington's next contest against the Golden Knights on Tuesday.

Impact Lindgren will get the Opening Night start Saturday with Logan Thompson backing him up. Lindgren was the No. 1 goaltender in Washington last season, going 25-16-7 with six shutouts, a 2.67 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 50 regular-season appearances. He will face the Devils, who have already played three games (2-1-0), finding the back of the net nine times thus far.

Logan Thompson - Back at practice Friday Thompson (personal) returned to practice Friday, according to Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.

Impact Thompson was away from the Capitals all week while tending to a family matter. There is no word as to whether or not he will start Opening Night on Saturday against the Devils, or if Charlie Lindgren will get the assignment. Thompson was 25-14-5 with a 2.70 GAA and a .908 save percentage in 46 regular-season appearances for the Golden Knights in 2023-24. He is expected to share the net with Lindgren this season.

Spencer Smallman - Lands on waivers Smallman was placed on waivers by the Capitals on Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Impact Smallman joined the Capitals on a one-year, two-way contract at the beginning of July, and he'll head to AHL Hershey if he clears waivers. He hasn't yet made his NHL debut, but he tallied 12 goals and 21 points over 53 regular-season appearances with AHL Colorado last year.
