Impact Petersen entered the match in the 70th minute and scored Freiburg's second goal in the 75th minute. It was the first goal in 27 appearances on the season for the forward and surely an emotional one as Petersen has just one match left before heading into retirement at the end of the season.

Impact Petersen has agreed to a limited role with the club this season, not starting once in 21 appearances in the league. He spent seven seasons with Freiburg, totaling 59 goals and 11 assists in 198 appearances. He also spent a few seasons with the Bayern Munich and the Werder Bremen organization before making the move to Freiburg. The forward has not had much international football success, only receiving two caps for the Germany national team since 2018, but was on the team for the 2016 Olympics games, scoring six goals in six appearances.

Impact Petersen's role in the first team has utterly disappeared over the previous two seasons. In the 2019/20 campaign he was good for 2,400 minutes a total that fell to 1,289 in 2020/21, before being halved once again to only 567 during the 2021/22 season. Petersen's role is simply gone, even if he is efficient during his limited time on the pitch. Unless he has a surprise renaissance in his age-34 season it's impossible to trust the veteran striker.

Impact It's certainly a step in the right direction for Petersen though it seems unlikely he'll immediately jump into the match-day squad versus VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. Despite making just 12 starts in 32 appearances last season, the forward still managed to rack up eight goals on 33 shots (12 on target). If he can break into the starting XI with more consistency, Petersen should be capable of getting back over the 10-goal threshold, a mark he hit in each of the prior four campaigns.
