MLS playoffs kick off with new format, a best-of-three first-round series

Major League Soccer's playoffs have a new twist this season: the opening round will be a best-of-three series.

Rasmus Alm - Out Sunday Alm (arm) is out for Sunday's clash with Kansas City, Tom Timermann reports.

Impact Alm will miss the first match of a best-of-three against Kansas City. The forward being out will likely keep Nicholas Gioacchini and Samuel Adeniran in the starting XI to lead the line for the first match of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Jake Nerwinski - Whips in four crosses Nerwinski generated four crosses (two accurate) and one chance created in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Seattle Sounders FC.

Impact Nerwinski had a decent performance on both sides of the pitch on Saturday, registering one chance created and four crosses in the attack to go along with two interceptions, two clearances and three tackles won. He has now started the past four games after a slight spell with injuries and should be their normal starter for playoffs.

Tim Parker - Gives up own goal Parker recorded an own goal, one clearance and two interceptions in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 75th minute.

Impact Parker was the unfortunate recipient of an own goal in Saturday's match after deflecting a ball into his net in the 38th minute. The defender had a pretty poor performance even without the own goal, only notching two interceptions and one clearance in the loss.

Anthony Markanich - Four crosses in loss Markanich generated one shot (one on goal), four crosses (zero accurate) and one chance created in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Seattle Sounders FC.

Impact Markanich wasn't exceptional on Saturday, but he was able to contribute something with his four crosses. The defender has started to see more time in the starting XI lately, starting in the last three matches after only getting three starts in the first 26 matches.

Eduard Lowen - Accumulates 12 crosses Lowen recorded four shots (one on goal), 12 crosses (five accurate) and seven corners in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Seattle Sounders FC.

Impact Lowen had a great match on Saturday despite his team not scoring a goal for themselves, registering two chances created, four shots, eight tackles and 12 crosses in the loss. This tied the midfielder's season high for crosses, but he did manage to record a new season high in tackles with his eight. With 15 goal contributions this season, he looks to be one of the main leaders of this Kansas City team heading into playoffs.

Roman Burki - Allows two against Sounders Burki recorded three saves and allowed two goals in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Seattle Sounders FC.

Impact Burki didn't have his best performance after sitting out last match, allowing two goals while making three saves in the loss. He now is yet to record a clean sheet in his last three appearances, only having one in his last ten matches. He will hope to turn this around as his team heads into playoffs as the one seed.

Impact Lundt made his debut for St. Louis City SC, with starter Roman Burki being on the bench for this one. Unfortunately for him, his side was entirely outmatched by the opposition, especially during the second half, and the goalkeeper ended up allowing three goals. However, it would've been a much bigger defeat if it wasn't for his efforts as he proved to be ready to fill in when Burki needs to miss some time.

Joshua Yaro - Busy defensively versus Vancouver Yaro made two tackles (both won), eight clearances, one interception and one block during Wednesday's 3-0 loss against Vancouver.

Impact Yaro had another chance to start and for the second consecutive game was able to put up impressive numbers despite being part of a team that was entirely dominated during the second half. The center-back had a very difficult journey against Vancouver's talented forward but still found his way to prevail sometimes. With 19 clearances over his last two starts, Yaro will hope to be considered for a spot in the lineup during the upcoming playoffs.

Eduard Lowen - Quiet performance versus Vancouver Lowen had one off-target shot, sent in four inaccurate crosses, drew two fouls and was shown a yellow card during Wednesday's 3-0 loss against Vancouver.
