Negotiating a return Schmitt is still negotiating a return to Houston on a new contract, the club announced.

Impact Schmitt is hoping to return to Houston as his role grew slightly in 2024. He still didn't play any sort of major minutes though, with just 427 total minutes across 17 appearances (four starts.) The defender still hasn't matched his final season in Salt Lake, though Houston have seemingly valued him as a depth option.

Impact Schmitt was subbed into the match for the final minute of regular time, presumably with the idea of having the player available for the then impending penalty shootout. Houston's manager planned the substitution skillfully, but players decide games. In this case, Schmitt was unable to rise to the occasion. He was stonewalled by Seattle's keeper and Houston was eliminated from the 2024 MLS playoffs. Impact Schmitt reclaimed his starting spot Saturday after serving off the bench in the club's past seven games, going unused in five of those games. He saw a pretty good performance in his return, registering two shots, two chances created and a season-high of five crosses. He will hope to remain in this spot, although he will likely drop to the bench once Griffin Dorsey (suspension) and Franco Escobar (lower body) return.

No longer injured Schmitt (knee) has recovered from his injury after making the starting XI in Tuesday's Concacaf Champions Cup 2-1 loss to St. Louis.

Impact Schmitt will now be an option for the first game of the season against Kansas City on Saturday, having finally recovered from a knee issue that caused him to miss almost all of last season. The defender should now be expected to start on opening day, as he started in all five contests when available in the previous campaign and was starting in his first game back Tuesday. He will now hope to avoid another long absence due to an injury, as he is yet to serve a full season as a regular starter and is in line for that this campaign.

Impact Schmitt said he is very close to returning, however is not expected to be available right away for the home opener against Sporting Kansas City. Once Schmitt is back, he is set to compete for the starting role with Franco Escobar.
