Russell Wilson: Dating Ciara, big contract not source of struggles

Published Nov. 20, 2015 10:18 a.m. ET

Russell Wilson had a whirlwind offseason that not only involved signing a four-year, $87.6 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks, but also saw him publicly announce his relationship with pop star Ciara. But the struggling quarterback insists neither the new contract nor the new romance is the source of his struggles on the field.

The Seahawks signal-caller denied that the mega-deal has added pressure on him to perform at a higher level, saying, “No, I don’t think so at all,” adding, “Nothing has changed.”

His high-profile relationship with Ciara has put Wilson under scrutiny for how frequently he posts items to social media documenting the couple’s comings and goings. The couple recently took a trip to Mexico during Seattle’s recent bye week, after which Wilson posted his worst outing of the season in a 39-32 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was asked why he shares so much of his personal life on Twitter.

“I keep most of it private,” he said, via the Seattle Times. “My private life is my private life, but at the same time, there’s no fear or anything like that. I’m grateful for the people I have in my life and the surroundings from the team to my friends. I’m sure you’re referring to Ciara, too; she’s an unbelievable person. That’s a part of, but I think ultimately when it comes down to football, the focus is on football. That’s just how it has to be and how it always is.”

Wilson certainly has had his fair share of underwhelming performances this season — even prompting public criticism from the Seahawks’ coaching staff — but the 4-5 team’s season-long struggles aren’t entirely his fault.

Interestingly, he isn’t even the only superstar quarterback whose personal life has been the topic of debate this week. A handful of misguided Green Bay Packers fans opined this week that Aaron Rodgers’ up-and-down season is due to his relationship with actress Olivia Munn.
