Alex Ovechkin scored the final two goals of the game to lift the visiting Washington Capitals over the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime, 5-4. Victor Rask scored two goals to lead Carolina. Despite the loss, the Hurricanes moved into a tie for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with the New York Islanders.
