Impact Mayer's 14 points were a team high, but he was one of five Bears to score in double figures. Mayer offers a lot of versatility to play different positions and to score inside and out. He only played 21 minutes on Friday, but should see more action as Baylor starts to get to tougher opponents.

James Akinjo - 10 points in Baylor debut Akinjo racked up 10 points (4-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT), two rebounds, six assists and one steal in 29 minutes during Friday's 87-60 win over Incarnate Word.

Impact Akinjo had a decent day by his standards. He wasn't needed to score much in the rout, but did a nice job running the offense in his first outing as a Baylor Bear. The prized Arizona transfer should continue to get more comfortable as the season goes on. Akinjo will face more easy tests against Nicholls State on Monday and Central Arkansas on Wednesday.

Langston Love - Season done before it starts Love suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Saturday's private scrimmage against Texas A&M.

Impact This is a major loss for a Baylor program that suffered significant departures in its backcourt following its 2021 championship campaign. While Love wasn't necessarily guaranteed a starting backcourt spot, he was still a consensus four-star guard who would have been in the rotation -- he had apparently logged 13 points in the secret scrimmage before suffering the injury. Now, the team will have to rely on James Akinjo and Adam Flagler more heavily, with LJ Cryer -- who recently returned from a foot injury -- likely in the mix for a meaningful role as well.

Impact Cryer underwent offseason foot surgery in early September but was never in doubt to miss the beginning of the season. His return completes the Bears' backcourt depth as he should hold a sizeable role behind James Akinjo at point guard. The 6-1 sophomore's playing time was capped at just under 10 minutes per game last season due to the Bears' incredible depth. However, with Jared Butler, MaCio Teague and Davion Mitchell all moving on, Cryer will be able to see heftier usage in year two.

LJ Cryer - Nearing return Baylor head coach Scott Drew said Monday that Cryer (foot) is "about a week and a half away" from returning to full basketball activities, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

Impact After undergoing foot surgery earlier in the offseason, the rising sophomore looks on his way to being back to full health by the time Baylor begins its season Nov. 12. Cryer averaged 3.4 points, 0.8 assists and 0.6 rebounds in 9.9 minutes per game over 20 appearances as a true freshman, but he should be in line for a much larger role as a sophomore after Baylor lost guards Jared Butler, MaCio Teague, Davion Mitchell and Mark Vital from last year's NCAA title team.
