Oregon opens first Big Ten season looking for better NCAA Tournament finish

The Oregon Ducks embark on their first season in the Big Ten

Denied extra year Dante has been denied an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

Impact Dante only played six games during the 2020-21 season with Oregon due to a knee injury and 12 games in the previous year when the NCAA Tournament was cancelled. Considering this, he has also been with the Ducks for five seasons and the NCAA has deemed his availability within each year enough to say his college career is over. Oregon will appeal the decision, but the chance that Dante will see the court at the collegiate level again is unlikely.

Excellent in upset win Dante recorded 23 points (7-9 FG, 9-15 FT), six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in Thursday's 87-73 win over No. 6 South Carolina.

Impact While Jermaine Couisnard's 40 points will take all the headlines, Dante was excellent in Thursday's First Round win. He tied a season high with 15 free throw attempts and scored over 20 points for the fourth time in his last seven games. He now faces a matchup with three-time Big East defensive player of the year Ryan Kalkbrenner and the No. 3 Creighton Blue Jays Saturday with a place in the Sweet 16 on the line.

Impact Dante hasn't played since Nov. 6 due to a hamstring injury but is expected to give it a go Saturday. However, it wouldn't be surprising if the senior big man is put on a minutes restriction.

Impact Dante was active for full court scrimmages Tuesday, with Oregon's next game coming Saturday against California. Undefeated through four conference games thus far, Oregon could opt to use extreme caution in bringing back Dante, but his return appears imminent.

Impact Dante has yet to suit up since the season opener when he put up a stellar stat line of 16 points and 21 boards in a victory over Georgia. He's missed the three games since and was already ruled out for this weekend's Emerald Coast Classic, but with Friday's news, the outlook is far more serious than originally anticipated. Fellow center Nate Bittle (wrist) also underwent surgery this week and won't be evaluated for eight weeks, leaving the Ducks severely depleted at the five. Mahamadou Diawara and Kwame Evans will both see significantly expanded roles until at least late-December as a result.
