Impact Goodwin made all of his scoring damage from deep and was one of Notre Dame's most prolific scorers in what was a solid win for the Fighting Irish. Goodwin averaged a career-best 11.8 points per game last season but could easily surpass that mark now that he's likely to have a bigger role than in past years.

Impact Aside from co-leading the team in scoring, perhaps the most important factor about this is the fact that Atkinson got the start and that bodes well for his chances of being in the starting unit for Tuesday's season opener against Cal-State Northridge.

Robby Carmody - Outlook not optimistic According to Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune, there's "zero chance" Carmody suits up for Notre Dame this season.
Impact This is quite a statement regarding a player who was at one point expected to be cleared by Oct. 1, so it appears there may have been some type of setback for the veteran guard. Carmody has a long history with knee injuries, as he suffered a torn ACL in December of 2019 before fracturing his kneecap a little more than nine months afterwards. Noie seems to think Carmody recently underwent a knee scope as well, though that may just be speculation on his part. Either way, it seems like Carmody can safely be left on the waiver wire in even the deepest of formats. In the meantime, it appears Notre Dame will play a starting backcourt of Prentiss Hubb, Cormac Ryan and Dane Goodwin, with Trey Wertz in line to be the first off the bench.

Trey Wertz - Back from ankle injury Wertz (ankle) had 15 points (5-7 FG, 5-7 3Pt) and three rebounds across 20 minutes off the bench in Friday's 78-44 exhibition victory over St. Norbert College.
Impact The level of competition should be taken into account here, but Wertz appeared to be in mid-season form -- especially from distance -- after battling an ankle injury for much of preseason practice. He also chipped in an assist, a steal and a block for one of the most complete stat lines of any Notre Dame player. He may not crack the starting five, with Prentiss Hubb, Cormac Ryan and Dane Goodwin all returning, but Wertz could easily be considered a Sixth Man of the Year candidate in the ACC due to his ability to score in bunches.

He seems to be trending in the right direction leading up to the opener, though it's unclear if his conditioning will be up to a point where he can play a normal workload. More information on his status should surface sometime over the next week.
