BYU's quarterback competition might be heating up BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis will have to "earn" his starting job back after missing last week with injury, Kalani Sitake says.

Kedon Slovis - Not promised starting role Slovis (arm) is not guaranteed the starting quarterback spot upon making his return from injury, Mitch Harper of KSL News Salt Lake City reports.

Impact Head coach Kalani Sitake stated that Slovis will "have to earn the right to get that back", in reference to the Cougars' starting quarterback spot when he makes his return from an arm injury. The senior quarterback has thrown for 1,716 yards (152-of-265), 12 touchdowns and six interceptions across eight appearances this season. Slovis will compete to earn his starting spot back with Jake Retzlaff, who made his first career start against West Virginia in Week 10.

Kody Epps - Questionable vs Iowa State Head coach Kalani Sitake indicated Monday that Epps (undisclosed) has a chance to play in Saturday's game against Iowa State, Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Impact Sitake mentioned there will be more clarification in regards to his status on Wednesday or Thursday. Epps left the game early after taking a hard hit in the game against West Virginia. The 5-foot-11 wide receiver has totaled eight receptions for 81 yards across five games.

Chase Roberts - Eight targets in loss at WVU Roberts accrued four catches (on eight targets) for 53 yards during Saturday's 37-7 loss versus West Virginia.

Impact Roberts has at least four catches in six of nine games this year, however, has just one 100-yard receiving game. BYU's offense has struggled in the new Big 12 conference, and they are dealing with injuries at the quarterback position currently. BYU will play a tough Iowa State defense next week.

Aidan Robbins - Records first TD at BYU Robbins tallied 10 carries for 37 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 37-7 defeat versus West Virginia.

Impact Robbins scored his first touchdown at BYU. The UNLV transfer has now received double digit carries in each of his last three games. He appears to be the starting running back for the team for the rest of the year, but next week will be tough as they go up against Iowa State who has the best defense in the conference.

Jake Retzlaff - Tough outing in first start at BYU Retzlaff completed 24 of 42 passes for 210 yards during Saturday's 37-7 defeat versus West Virginia. He also had 10 rushes for 26 yards.

Impact Retzlaff started in place of an injured Kedon Slovis (arm) and wasn't able to do much against a tough West Virginia defense. The junior college transfer completed just 57.1 percent of his passes. Stay tuned to see if he receives another start against Iowa State.

Impact Even with a hamstring injury likely expected to limit Roberts despite him being available, he still put forth an admirable log Saturday. He has 37 receptions for 512 yards (13.8 per catch) and four touchdowns across his 2023 season, already a step up compared to his 2022.

Impact Roberts was termed expected to play earlier in the week, and it certainly appears as though he's in line to play despite dealing with a hamstring issue. Roberts enters the content with 33 catches for 459 yards and four touchdowns on 52 targets.

LJ Martin - Active but won't start Martin (undisclosed) is good to go for Saturday's game against West Virginia but will not start, Greg Wrubell of BYU football reports.

Impact Martin was unable to go a week ago versus Texas but will be in action Saturday and should be back in the fold. The true freshman figures to see more of a split with Aidan Robbins who is expected to get the start. Martin has certainly been the more impactful back of the two, total 438 yards and four touchdowns on 96 carries this season.

Darius Lassiter - Won't play Saturday Lassiter will not suit up for Saturday's game against West Virginia, Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Impact Lasiteris coming off a combined 17 targets and nine catches over the last two weeks, turning them into 122 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the senior wideout will not be able to give it a go Saturday. He'll have another chance to rejoin the action next week against Iowa State.

Impact Slovis is not healthy enough to start Saturday's game, but it's a somewhat good sign that he's healthy enough to dress and play if absolutely necessary. He has started every game this season for the Cougars, accounting for 15 total touchdowns and six interceptions. Jake Retzlaff will get the nod at quarterback for BYU Saturday.
