Impact Shrout suffered the injury last week in the midst of a quarterback competition he had a chance of winning. Now that he's out of the mix this fall, it appears he's going to work as a mentor for the younger quarterbacks on the roster as he rehabs in preparation for another run at the starting job come 2022.

Impact Russell missed the majority of 2020 due to an ankle injury but did show out well in his lone outing of the campaign, reeling in five of his 10 targets for 77 yards and a touchdown. He seems the likely candidate to sit atop the Week 1 tight end depth this season and could be a sneaky value at the position if his lone game last year is any indication of his potential as a receiver.

Brendon Lewis - Set to open season under center Following the major knee injury for JT Shrout, Lewis will start the opener under center against FCS Northern Colorado on Sept. 3, Brian Howell of the Boulder Daily Camera reports.

Impact Lewis had been neck and neck with Shrout for the starting quarterback job to open the campaign, but Shrout's injury will exclude him from the competition the rest of the way. It's surely not the way Lewis had hoped to win the starting job, but he's now locked in under center, sporting very little experience to date. The freshman appeared in just one game last season, completing six of his 10 pass attempts for 95 yards while also running for 73 yards and a score on nine carries. Freshman Drew Carter and walk-on Jordan Woolverton are the only quarterbacks on the roster for the Buffs at this point, leaving the room thinned out a bit heading into 2021.

J.T. Shrout - Dealing with significant knee issue Shrout suffered a "significant" knee injury during Saturday's practice, Brian Howell of the Boulder Daily Camera reports.

Impact Shrout was carted off the field Saturday, which seemed like a pretty good indicator that the knee injury could be severe in nature. It's now been confirmed that he will miss at least a good chunk of the 2021 campaign, opening the door for Brendon Lewis to begin the campaign as the Buffs' starting quarterback.

Impact Shrout's injury occurred without any contact with another player, as he was running with the ball and made a cut before going down. He was subsequently carted off the field.
