Reece Vander Zee - Won't return Saturday Vander Zee was spotted in street clothes and a boot after exiting Saturday's game against Northwestern and won't return, David Eickholt of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact Vander Zee didn't record a catch in this game, and his loss will thin the team's depth at wide receiver. The diagnosis of the injury is unclear, but his next chance to play will come against Wisconsin on Nov. 2. He has 14 catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns in 2024, and his absence would open the door for more playing to the likes of Seth Anderson, Kaden Wetjen and Terrell Washington.

Impact Ostrenga will remain "out for awhile" according to head coach Kirk Ferentz. The 6-foot-4 junior tight end, who suffered an arm injury against the Buckeyes in Week 6, totaled 11 receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown across the Hawkeyes first five games. Iowa has Wisconsin (11/2), UCLA (11/8), Maryland (11/23) and Nebraska (11/29) on their upcoming schedule, but it remains to be seen when Ostrenga will be able to return.

Impact Vander Zee connected with quarterback Cade McNamara on an 18-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, getting the Hawkeyes on the board for the day and drawing them within five points in the first half. The freshman receiver was one of the few bright spots for the Iowa offense on a day in which McNamara threw for just 150 yards and completed less than 50 percent of his passes. Vander Zee will look to build on his performance when the Hawkeyes host Northwestern this week.

Impact Despite the solid statline, Johnson was held mostly in check throughout the day, with most of his production coming on a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The junior running back was more involved in the passing game due to the lack of a consistent running game, catching four passes for 49 yards, both of which marked season-best totals. Johnson has been one of the best running backs in all of college football this season, running for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns through the team's first seven games on an impressive 7.8 YPC. His next opportunity to better those numbers will come in a home battle against Northwestern this coming Saturday.

Despite his limited opportunities, fellow quarterback Cade McNamara's struggles could open the door for a larger workload for Sullivan moving forward this season. A home battle against Northwestern awaits this coming Saturday.

Impact McNamara had a rough day against the Spartans, completing less than 50 percent of his passes and throwing his fourth interception of the season. The senior signal-caller connected with receiver Reece Vander Zee on an 18-yard strike in the third quarter, bringing the Hawkeyes to within five points before the Spartans managed to pull away late. McNamara has had a less-than-stellar season thus far, throwing for 944 yards and six touchdowns to four interceptions through the team's first seven games. Fellow quarterback Brendan Sullivan has been receiving more opportunities over the last several weeks, indicating that the starting job may be up for grabs over the next few games. McNamara's next opportunity will come when the Hawkeyes host Northwestern this coming Saturday.
