Hunter Watson - Second start a concern Watson went 9-for-13 for 82 yards and two interceptions against UCF on Saturday. He also ran seven times for 15 yards.

Impact Watson won a three-way QB battle for Sam Houston and impressed in the opener against Rice. He clearly struggled in Week 2 and Jace Bauer got playing time under center. It will be interesting to see the play at quarterback for Week 3's game against Hawaii.

Noah Smith - Quiet in 2024 opener Smith only had two catches for 11 yards against Rice on Saturday.

Impact Last season, as Sam Houston made the move from the FCS to the FBS, Smith was about the only offensive bright spot. He had 79 catches for 783 yards and six touchdowns, while adding two rushing scores. To opener 2024, the Bearkats actually looked good offensively, but strikingly Smith wasn't part of it. He was only targeted three times as well, which is a bit of a concern.

Ife Adeyi - Finds end zone Adeyi caught five passes for 63 yards against Rice on Saturday.

Impact Adeyi played in three games last season before missing the rest of the year with an injury. The Sam Houston offense was really struggling to get going during that time after the move up from the FCS. We still have yet to really see what Adeyi can be at the FBS level.

Qua'Vez Humphreys - Catches TD in opener Humphreys caught three passes for 93 yards and a touchdown versus Rice on Saturday.

Impact Humphreys missed all of last season with a broken foot. He had a 67-yard catch in this game. Seems like his foot is just fine.

John Gentry - Rushes for TD Gentry ran the ball 14 times for 56 yards and a touchdown versus Rice on Saturday.

Impact Gentry served as a secondary piece in this offense in 2023, his first collegiate action since spending the 2021 season with Utah State. He only ran for 391 yards and three touchdowns, but added 36 catches for 271 yards and two scores. What is notable is that Memphis transfer Jay Ducker, who some thought might unseat Gentry as the top back for the Bearkats, only had seven carries for 20 yards.

Hunter Watson - Impresses in first start Watson went 16-for-27 for 229 yards and two touchdowns against Rice on Saturday. He also ran 14 times for 57 yards.

Impact Watson somewhat surprisingly won a three-way quarterback battle to start for the Bearkats. Not only that, but he was the only quarterback to get any snaps in this one. Rice isn't exactly a juggernaut, but it is an AAC team that won six games last season. This is a very encouraging beginning to his time as SHSU's starter.

Jase Bauer - Not starting Bauer will backup Hunter Watson during Sam Houston's opener versus Rice on Saturday.

Impact Bauer was unable to win the starting job after competing with Watson and Grant Gunnell. Bauer will likely only see playing time Saturday if Watson either struggles or suffers an injury.

Impact It's unclear which player will be under center for Sam Houston in the season opener, and Bauer is an option alongside Grant Gunnell and Hunter Watson. Bauer spent the first two years of his college career at Central Michigan, and he completed 56.8 percent of his passes for 1,881 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions in the 2023 campaign.

Given that Bauer was most recently seen running the first team, he is the favorite to actually start when the Bearkats' season kicks off on Saturday.

Jay Ducker - Healthy and ready to go Ducker is "healthy and ready to go" after an ankle injury he suffered during Sam Houston's fall camp, Sports of SHSU reports.

Impact Now, Ducker is ready for his fresh start. He transferred to Sam Houston from Memphis after sitting out the Tigers' 2023 season because of an undisclosed injury. Before it, Ducker excelled for their 2022 team, having logged 110 carries for 544 yards (4.9 averaged per carry) and seven touchdowns across his 13 games then.

Impact Ducker was previously seen in a boot during Wednesday's scrimmage, but the junior returned to practice Sunday in a limited fashion. The 5-foot-9 running back joined Sam Houston after transferring from Memphis in the offseason. Ducker, who missed the 2023 season with an injury, ran for 544 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tigers in 2022, adding 12 catches for 103 yards through the air as well.

Jase Bauer - Takes first-team reps Bauer received first-team reps in Sam Houston's first scrimmage, Colton Foster of The Huntsville Item reports.

Impact Bauer was expected to be the starter for the Bearkats since he transferred in from Central Michigan. The quarterback battle between him, Grant Gunnell and Hunter Watson has been neck-and-neck, but Bauer appears to have taken a slight lead by taking the first-team reps in Sam Houston's scrimmage.

Impact Humphreys broke one of his feet relatively right before the 2023 Bearkats began their regular season. Fast-forward more than 11 months later, and he is healthy again, based on the observation of him "looking impressive" with "a couple nice catches" Wednesday.

Ife Adeyi - Plays in scrimmage Adeyi (undisclosed) was observed playing during Wednesday's scrimmage, Sam Houston SportsTalk reports.

Impact Adeyi missed all but three games due to an undisclosed injury during the 2023 season. The senior wide receiver was observed catching a deep pass from quarterback Hunter Watson during Wednesday's scrimmage, indicating the injury is behind him. Across three games last season, the 5-foot-10 pass-catcher tallied seven receptions for 74 yards.
