Noah Smith - Rushes for over 30 yards Smith caught two passes for 16 yards and ran three times for 31 yards Saturday against Texas State.
Impact The Bearkats have pivoted to a run-heavy offense, and it's working. Smith was one of two receivers for SHSU who had more carries than catches, and last season Smith ran 27 times for 102 yards and two scores.

DJ McKinney - Rushes for over 50 yards again McKinney ran nine times for 55 yards and caught two passes for 22 yards against Texas State on Saturday.
Impact The redshirt freshman has emerged as the number-two back for Sam Houston, but that makes him the number-three option with quarterback Hunter Watson in the mix as well. That being said, McKinney has run for over 50 yards in each of his last two games.

Jay Ducker - Rushes for three TDs Ducker ran 14 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns versus Texas State on Saturday.
Impact Credit to Sam Houston's offensive staff, as they have pivoted to suit the roster much like Michigan up in the Big Ten. It's all about running the ball now, as even two of its receivers had more carries than catches. Ducker, though, is the lead back, and that seems like a good role to be in for the Bearkats.

Hunter Watson - New offensive philosphy at SHSU Watson went 10-for-19 for 95 yards and ran 27 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns against Texas State on Saturday. He did lose a fumble as well.
Impact It would seem the Sam Houston staff has tweaked the offense to suit Watson's skills. This is the second week in a row where Watson has run for over 100 yards and scored two TDs, and this time his carries were way up. Notably, this week Jase Bauer didn't see any snaps under center either, so it seems Watson, running quarterback is the guy.

Qua'Vez Humphreys - Held without a catch Humphreys did not have a catch on two targets against NMSU on Saturday.
Impact Humphreys started the season well with 10 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns over the first three games. Thus, not having a catch against lowly NMSU is a concern. What's also notable is that he had not had fewer than four targets in a game previously.

Jase Bauer - Throws TD in relief Bauer went 3-for-5 for 38 yards and a touchdown against NMSU on Saturday. He also ran five times for 45 yards.
Impact Hunter Watson, Sam Houston's starter, ran for over 100 yards with two touchdowns. He also went 9-for-21 for 64 yards with two picks. Was Bauer involved as a change of pace? Was the Bearkats staff confident in a win? Or is there a real quarterback competition here?

Impact Sam Houston is 3-1 even though the offense has operated in odd ways, including emergences and disappearances by several receivers. Evans' role is clearer, and it is a tertiary role. He has two touchdowns, but he is also yet to top three catches in a game.

DJ McKinney - Rushes for 58 yards McKinney ran 10 times for 58 yards versus NMSU on Saturday.
Impact He's been on the periphery, but the redshirt freshman McKinney has been involved every week. The Tulsa native now has 34 carries and has averaged 4.6 yards per rush. That's not remarkable, but he may be earning his way into a larger role.

Jay Ducker - Slogs way to TD Tucker ran 20 times for 38 yards and a touchdown against NMSU on Saturday.
Impact Touchdown or not, averaging a mere 1.9 yards per carry over 20 carries is pretty rough to see. However, last week he ran for 148 yards on 15 carries. Also, in 2021, the last season he was healthy, Ducker ran for 1,184 yards on 218 carries for NIU, so this might have just been a tough day he slogged through to find the end zone.

Hunter Watson - Runs well, throws poorly Watson went 9-for-21 for 64 yards and two interceptions against NMSU on Saturday. However, he did run 12 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Impact It's also worth noting that Watson left the game to get medical attention, and Jase Bauer stepped in. Watson has been all over the place in terms of performance, and it's only been four games, but the Bearkats are 3-1 so it's working for now. As long as Watson is healthy enough to play, expect to see him next week against Texas State.

Impact Adeyi was a star for Sam Houston in 2021, but that was when it was still an FCS program. Last year, its first at the FBS level, he only played in eight games. As such, we are still waiting to see what Adeyi can do for the Bearkats when healthy.

Qua'Vez Humphreys - Catches two TDs Humphreys caught four passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns versus Hawaii on Saturday. He also rushed once for 10 yards.
Impact Humphreys now has two games with over 90 yards and a touchdown, having seemingly emerged as the lead receiver for the Bearkats. That's good for him, but it has also seemingly had an impact on Noah Smith. Smith was the top receiver for SHSU last year, but has 19 receiving yards this season.

Jay Ducker - Finally able to get involved Ducker ran 15 times for 148 yards and had one catch for 10 yards Saturday versus Hawaii.
Impact Ducker impressed in a supporting role for Memphis in 2022, but then had to sit out the 2023 season with an injury. He transferred to Sam Houston, and then suffered an ankle injury in camp. While declared "ready to go" prior to the season, Ducker registered no carries the first two weeks. Now, he's racked up 148 yards against the Rainbow Warriors. Seems like he's healthy.

Hunter Watson - Bounces back versus Hawaii Hunter went 15-for-23 for 165 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception against Hawaii on Saturday. He also ran 10 times for 45 yards.
Impact After surprisingly winning the QB job for the Bearkats, Watson played well against Rice, and then really struggled against UCF. He rebounded against Hawaii, and notably no other quarterback registered any stats, so clearly Watson remains the guy under center.
