Struggles in loss Wood (3-3) picked up the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four in three innings in a 10-1 defeat Sunday against San Diego.
Impact Wood was in trouble all game and allowed base runners in each inning. He pitched around a leadoff single in the third after giving up a run in each of the first two innings. In the fourth, the first three batters reached safely, plating a run, and Wood was replaced with two runners on base, both eventually scored on a Manny Machado double. It was easily the worst start of the year for Wood and only the second time he allowed more than three runs. Opponents have a .303 batting average against the veteran in a season where the league average is .236. His next start will likely be next weekend in Cincinnati.

Impact Wood put multiple Rockies on base in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but was able to limit the damage to an unearned run in the fourth. Manager Gabe Kapler let the 31-year-old toss a season-high 104 pitches -- 15 more than his next highest outing -- though Wood was only able to tie his season high in innings. Impact Wood never really got it going Friday as he surrendered runs in each of the game's first three innings and departed with the score at a competitive 5-3, but the bullpen imploded to keep him on the hook for the loss. This was the 31-year-old's first poor outing, as the five runs he permitted were more than he allowed in his first three starts combined. He'll look to get back on track during a projected start against St. Louis next week.
