Daulton Varsho - Not starting Thursday Varsho will be on the bench Thursday against the Nationals.
Impact Varsho was a popular pick during draft season based on the theory that he'd play nearly every day in the outfield while swinging a competent bat, a combination that would make him quite interesting given his catcher eligibility. He has indeed had that near everyday role, as Thursday represents just his second time out of the lineup, but his results at the plate have been mixed. He's not hitting the ball often, striking out 29.8 percent of the time while hitting .184, but he's hitting it very hard, homering three times while recording a 20.0 percent barrel rate. He'll rest here after going 2-for-11 with a pair of homers in his last three games, with Jake McCarthy starting in center.

Sergio Alcántara - Not in Thursday's lineup Alcantara isn't starting Thursday's game against Washington.

Impact Davidson has gotten off to a hot start at Triple-A Reno this year, hitting .386/.471/.955 with eight home runs, 12 RBI and eight runs in 11 games. He hit just .163 in 22 appearances with the Reds last year, but he'll be rewarded with a spot on Arizona's 40-man roster and is a candidate to get some playing time since the team has struggled offensively early in the season.

Merrill Kelly - Sharp in first win of season Kelly (1-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 11-2 rout of the Nationals, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
Impact The right-hander saw his scoreless streak to begin the season end at 15 innings, but Kelly still put together another excellent outing in his first quality start of the season, and this time he actually got some run support. He sports a 0.59 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB through 15.1 innings, and while some regression will be coming, even his current 1.70 FIP is outstanding.

Seth Beer - Drives in three Beer went 3-for-4 with three RBI in Wednesday's 11-2 win over Washington.
Impact Beer, who had been in and out of the lineup to start the season, has started five of the last six games. All of those starts have come against right-handers, and it's not clear if Arizona manager Torey Lovullo will make Beer a full-timer regardless of the opposing pitcher. One thing is for certain is that Beer has been the team's best hitter since Opening Day, when he hit a walk-off home run. The lefty-swinging first baseman/DH is slashing .438/.486/.625 with a team-high eight RBI through 11 games. The teammate nearest him in average is Pavin Smith, who is batting .219.

Ketel Marte - Joins .200 club Marte went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 11-2 win over the Nationals.
Impact Marte is the latest Diamondback regular to push his average to .200 or better, making him one four players at or above the Mendoza line. He barely missed a home run on his first bat before popping out, but the second baseman later was involved in a pair of rallies in a breakout performance for the team. The Diamondbacks plated half as many runs in this one game than they had in the previous 11.

Impact Rookie Geraldo Perdomo has received the bulk of playing time at shortstop since Nick Ahmed (shoulder) opened the season in the IL, but the prospect is grinding through a 1-for-22 (.045) stretch. That leaves him vulnerable to a replacement like Alcantara, who is not doing much better at 2-for-21 (.095). The latest on Ahmed is that he's picked up activity and could return during a six-game homestand that kicks off Friday.

The hot corner is among the many areas the Diamondbacks need help -- the team's third basemen bring up the rear with a .111 batting average -- but the club seems intent on waiting for Rojas, who recently begun swinging a bat.
