Cooper Hummel - Makes first MLB appearance Hummel walked as a pinch hitter in Thursday's 4-2 win over San Diego.

Impact The 27-year-old Hummel won a roster spot after the Diamondbacks placed Jordan Luplow (oblique) on the injured list. The switch-hitting outfielder will fill a depth role and could emerge as a platoon option for any of David Peralta, Pavin Smith or Daulton Varsho, being the only rostered outfielder who bats from the right side.

Drew Ellis - Logs two plate appearances Ellis went 0-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of Thursday's 4-2 win over the Padres.

Impact Ellis got the start at third base with Josh Rojas (oblique) on the shelf for the first few weeks of the season. Sergio Alcantara replaced Ellis at third after Cooper Hummel walked as a pinch hitter in the seventh. For now, Ellis and Alcantara will share the hot corner. The organization acquired another player that can play third Thursday, picking up Yonny Hernandez from the Rangers, but he'll open at Triple-A Reno.

Impact Normally a starter, Weaver begins the season in the bullpen because of a blister on his right thumb that interrupted the right-hander's progression in camp. With 18 strikes among his 23 pitches, Weaver was around the plate but maybe caught too much of it. It's uncertain how long Weaver will remain in a relief role, but the Diamondbacks have confirmed Caleb Smith will make at least one start in his place.

Impact Along with Seth Beer, who hit a three-run walkoff home run, Smith was a bright spot in a lineup that could do little against starter Yu Darvish. Smith is not the fleetest of foot, having come up through the system as a first baseman despite getting the start in right field Thursday, so after a ninth-inning walk, he was replaced by pinch runner Jake McCarthy, who came around to score on Beer's blast.

Impact Ahmed has been given a pair of cortisone shots since his shoulder injury flared up toward the end of spring training. The shortstop's shoulder has bothered him for a couple of years now, but he's opted not to undergo surgery. He had a cortisone shot and a platelet-rich plasma injection during the offseason, but that did not alleviate Ahmed's symptoms. Geraldo Perdomo started at shortstop in Arizona's season-opening win over San Diego on Thursday.

Seth Beer - Celebrates National Beer Day Beer went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Padres.

Impact April 7 was National Beer Day, and appropriately enough, the rookie prompted a celebration in the home team's locker room after a walkoff blast. Arizona's offense scuffled for most of the game, but it got going after Yu Darvish didn't come out for the seventh inning. Beer served as the designated hitter and batted seventh in the order, and he will likely remain in the lower third most of this season -- that's been manager Torey Lovullo's customary practice with young players.

Impact Bumgarner's night was done after the left-hander needed 68 pitches to get nine outs. Daulton Varsho - Leading off in opener Varsho will start in center field and bat leadoff in Thursday's season opener against the Padres.

Impact Josh Rojas finished the 2021 season as the Diamondbacks' primary table setter, but those duties will fall to Varsho to begin 2022 while Rojas is on the injured list with a strained oblique. Varsho may need to improve upon last year's .318 on-base average to stick atop the lineup once Rojas is healthy again, but while he's locked into a key spot in the batting order, he should be a strong source of both runs and stolen bases. He'll provide that production while maintaining eligibility at catcher in most fantasy leagues, even though he's expected to play that position sparingly while Carson Kelly and Jose Herrera are on hand as options behind the dish.
