May not need rehab stint Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Chapman (elbow) may not need to go on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Yankees, Justin Shackil of SiriusXM reports.
Impact Chapman threw long toss Saturday with positive results, and a recent MLB.com report indicated that the team is hopeful he can return as soon as this week. The veteran closer last pitched Aug. 5, but he isn't likely to need much time to ramp back up given that he hasn't thrown more than one inning in an outing this season. His return should be a boon to a Yankees bullpen that has lost a ninth-inning lead multiple times during Chapman's absence.

Impact Chapman hit the injured list earlier in the day due to elbow inflammation, and it looks as if, for now, he isn't dealing with anything worse than that. The Yankees have yet to specify when he's expected to return, but it looks as though he'll have a chance at a relatively brief absence. Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga are tied for second on the team with three saves apiece and could be the top candidates for saves in his absence.

Impact Chapman had picked up saves in each of his last six outings, but he apparently developed an elbow issue. It's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the injured list, but Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga will likely be in consideration for ninth-inning duties while Chapman is sidelined.

Impact Chapman's outing didn't come without some stress -- Seattle got the tying run on base with a two-out single -- but the veteran closer was able to close out the contest and notch his 23rd save. His job appeared to be at least mildly in question after he gave up nine runs across 1.1 frames between June 23 and July 4, but Chapman has rebounded since then with an 11-inning stretch during which he has surrendered just one run while collecting 19 strikeouts. Walks remain a concern, however, as the left-hander has issued eight free passes in the 11-inning span and has posted a less-than-ideal 6.4 BB/9 on the season.
