Chris Martin - Nails down third save Martin worked a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his third save of the season in a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

Impact Two of those saves have come in the last week as Martin fills in for Kenley Jansen (COVID-19) as Boston's closer. The assignment is well-deserved -- Martin hasn't been tagged for a run since late July, reeling off 20 straight scoreless appearances and adding a win and seven holds to his ledger along the way. On the season, the veteran righty sports a scintillating 1.05 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 46:8 K:BB through 51.1 innings.

Ceddanne Rafaela - Makes first start at 2B Rafaela started at second base and went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 3-2 win over the White Sox.

Impact Rafaela has appeared at second base three times this season but Friday was the first start. The position, which has been a revolving door in 2023, is expected to be an open competition in 2024. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Sean McAdam of MassLive.com that the rookie could make a few more starts there in the final week. The manager also said the team is considering having Rafaela play second base during winter ball.

Chris Sale - Whiffs seven in no-decision Sale came away with a no-decision in Friday's 3-2 win over the White Sox, allowing three hits and a walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out seven.

Impact The veteran southpaw put together another strong outing, but Sale left the mound in line for his fifth loss of the year before Boston rallied in the eighth inning. Since returning from the IL in mid-August, he has a 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 52:13 K:BB through 38.2 innings, but just one win in eight starts to show for it. Sale figures to take the mound one more time in 2023, on the road next week in Baltimore.
