Tigers News: A.J. Hinch Optimistic About Return of Casey Mize Casey Mize is trending towards a Friday start, pending a positive meeting with the coaching staff.
Completes fourth rehab start Mize (hamstring) struck out seven and allowed three earned runs on three hits and no walks over 4.2 innings in his rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Toledo.
Impact Mize didn't perform quite as dominantly as he did in his prior three rehab outings, but he racked up 13 swinging strikes in the contest, and most importantly, built up to 78 pitches. Overall, Mize turned in a 2.63 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings across his four outings with Toledo, and he now looks ready to return from the 60-day injured list this upcoming weekend when first eligible. The Tigers could reinsert Mize into the rotation as soon as Friday's series opener versus the Red Sox in Detroit.

Since he was initially placed on the 15-day injured list July 3 with a strained left hamstring before being transferred to the 60-day IL, Mize won't be eligible for activation until Aug. 30, but he appears well on his way to being ready to reclaim a spot in the Detroit rotation on that date. He's scheduled to make his third rehab start for Toledo on Sunday and will likely make one or two more starts after that before being reinstated from the IL.

Impact Mize began his rehab assignment at Toledo on Thursday, striking out two batters and allowing three hits and one walk over 2.1 scoreless innings. The right-hander tossed 35 pitches in the start and generated six whiffs on 15 swings while sporting a fastball that averaged 93.5 miles per hour. Mize is expected to make four total rehab starts in the minors before returning from the 60-day injured list around the time that he's first eligible Aug. 30.

Impact Mize tweaked his hamstring during Sunday's start against the Angels and subsequent testing revealed a strain. It's not clear what the grade of the strain is, but the Tigers anticipate the right-hander missing at least three starts. Keider Montero has taken Mize's spot on the roster and will start Wednesday in Minnesota, but the club will need an additional starter to fill in this weekend, as well, with Jack Flaherty (back) also missing a turn.

Impact Mize had to depart Sunday's start against the Angels with a left hamstring issue. While the initial hope was that he was merely dealing with a cramp, Hinch said Tuesday that it's more serious than that.
