Adrian Sampson - Allows one run in spot startSampson allowed one run across four innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Reds. He gave up five hits while striking out two.
ImpactMaking his first MLB start since 2019, Sampson held his own and helped the Cubs secure the win, though he didn't last long enough for it to go on his ledger. The veteran righty was filling in for Adbert Alzolay (hamstring), who landed on the 10-day injured list Saturday. It's unclear if Sampson will be needed for another start, but he figures to be ready if called upon.

Manuel Rodríguez - Records first winRodriguez (1-2) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Wednesday against the Reds. He walked one and struck out three.
ImpactRodriquez earned his first MLB save earlier this month but he was the first pitcher out of the bullpen Wednesday, pitching the fifth and sixth innings in relief of Adrian Sampson. It looks like Rodriguez may be working in a flexible role for the Cubs, though that could be the case for most of the team's relievers -- the bullpen is a bit unsettled following the trade of Craig Kimbrel and Ryan Tepera at the deadline, as well as Dan Winkler getting designated for assignment. Rodriguez has been solid in limited work, recording a 3.38 ERA and 10 strikeouts across eight innings.

Rafael Ortega - Collects two hits, two runs in winOrtega went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Reds.
ImpactOrtega has settled in as a solid leadoff hitter for the Cubs, as he's now slashing .329/.389/.506 across 66 games this season. The 30-year-old outfielder hadn't been able to find sustained success at the MLB level before this year, but he's making a strong case to be a part of Chicago's plans in 2022.
AUGUST 19, 2021ROTOWIRE
Ian Happ - Goes deep again WednesdayHapp 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win over the Reds.
ImpactIt wasn't all positive for Happ, as the outfielder left five runners on base, but he still managed his second home run in as many days and 14th of the season. The power is there, and Happ could be primed for a decent finish to the season if he can keep making consistent contact.

Michael Hermosillo - Hits first 2021 home runHermosillo went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's win over the Reds.
ImpactHermosillo hit his first home run of the season and just the second of his MLB career in the second inning against Tyler Mahle. The 26-year-old outfielder just had his contract selected by the Cubs on Tuesday. After slashing .310/.448/.600 across 42 games for Triple-A Iowa, Hermosillo may get a long look from a rebuilding Chicago squad the rest of the way.
