Dillon Maples - Rehabbing at Triple-AMaples (finger) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 11 and has made four appearances, covering 4.1 innings while giving up four runs on five hits and four walks while...
ImpactBefore going on the injured list July 29 with a blister on his right middle finger, Maples was a productive reliever for Chicago with a 2.28 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 24 appearances, but he hadn't yet moved into a high-leverage role. With that in mind, the Cubs may want to see Maples turn in better results during his rehab assignment before bringing him back from the IL.

Jesse Winker - Yet to resume baseball activitiesWinker (ribs) hasn't yet resumed baseball activities, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ImpactWinker landed on the 10-day injured list with an intercostal strain Monday, and the Reds were initially hopeful that he'd be able to return when he's first eligible. However, manager David Bell said Thursday that he expects the 28-year-old to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the shelf. A better timetable for Winker's return should come into focus once he resumes baseball activities.

Jose Barrero - Notches first two hits of 2021Barrero went 2-for-3 with a double in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs.
ImpactBarrero struggled in his first cup of coffee in the big leagues last year at age 22. He responded by slashing .303/.378/.532 with 17 homers and 15 steals in 80 games between Double-A and Triple-A to open 2021, earning another look in Cincinnati. Barrero is a top prospect in the organization, and his performance Wednesday was a bright spot for the Reds -- Barrero also turned a pair of double plays alongside Jonathan India. However, Kyle Farmer has emerged as a viable major-league shortstop this season and Barrero has no professional outfield experience, so there does not appear to be a path to regular at-bats at the moment.

Tyler Naquin - Cracks solo homerNaquin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs.
ImpactHis homer off Adrian Sampson in the second inning -- Naquin's 15th this season -- accounted for all of the Reds' scoring. Following a brutal stretch that brought Naquin's playing time into question, he's suddenly hot again. Naquin has hit safely in eight straight games, slashing .419/.471/.677 during that stretch.

Tyler Mahle - Allows five runs in lossMahle (10-4) allowed five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings in a loss to the Cubs on Wednesday.
ImpactIt looked like a plus matchup on paper against a depleted Cubs team, but Mahle let this one get away early; Ian Happ and Michael Hermosillo homered in the first two innings. The long ball has been an issue at home for Mahle, who now has an even 6.00 ERA at Great American Ball Park this season, a number inflated by 17 homers served up in 63 innings. In stark contrast, Mahle has a 1.86 ERA on the road, with only three homers allowed in 72.2 innings. He projects for a road matchup against the first-place Brewers early next week.
