Chicago Cubs activate Nico Hoerner from the injured list. How will the middle infield options shake out?Hoerner initially feared he could miss more time after colliding with an umpire in shallow right field May 11 in San Diego. He bounced back...

Jonathan Villar - Remains on benchVillar isn't starting Wednesday against the Reds.
ImpactVillar has gone 5-for-18 with a homer, two doubles, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base over his last four games, but he'll be out of the lineup for a second straight matchup. Christopher Morel will start at the keystone and lead off.

Nico Hoerner - Comes back from ILThe Cubs reinstated Hoerner (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ImpactHoerner's return to the 26-man active roster comes as somewhat of a surprise, as the expectation was that he would require a brief minor-league rehab assignment before being activated after he had been sidelined for the past two weeks with a right ankle sprain. The Cubs evidently felt encouraged enough by how Hoerner looked in a full workout earlier this week to activate him, but the 25-year-old may have to settle for a utility role now that he's ostensibly healthy again. Hoerner will be on the bench for Wednesday's game against the Reds, as the hot-hitting Christopher Morel gets a look at second base while the defensive-minded Andrelton Simmons mans shortstop.

Yan Gomes - Lands on ILThe Cubs placed Gomes on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left oblique strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ImpactGomes was positioned for an uptick in playing time after top backstop Willson Contreras (hamstring) was on the bench for a third straight game in Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Reds, but Gomes' own injury ultimately proved to be a longer-term concern than Contreras'. P.J. Higgins will pick up another start behind the plate Wednesday in Cincinnati while Contreras continues to heal up, but the Cubs' decision not to call up another catcher in a corresponding move suggests that Contreras' injury remains a day-to-day issue.

Willson Contreras - Out for fourth straight gameContreras (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Cincinnati.
ImpactContreras' strained right hamstring will keep him on the bench for the fourth straight game, but his health at least appears to be a lesser concern than that of fellow backstop Yan Gomes (oblique), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. The Cubs could consider deactivating Contreras if he doesn't show more improvement heading into the weekend, but for now, he's being viewed as day-to-day. P.J. Higgins will pick up the start behind the plate Wednesday.

Colin Moran - On bench WednesdayMoran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
ImpactEven with right-hander Kyle Hendricks taking the hill for the Cubs, the lefty-hitting Moran will find himself on the bench for the penultimate game of the series. Moran should still play against right-handed pitching more often than not until Jonathan India (hamstring) returns from the injured list.
