Kyle Zimmer - Lands in CincinnatiZimmer signed with the Reds for undisclosed terms Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ImpactIt's not yet clear whether the deal is a major-league one. The 30-year-old righty owns a 5.19 ERA in 95.1 career major-league innings, walking 14.2 percent of opposing batters, so he's unlikely to find himself pitching in high-leverage innings.

Is this the right time for the Guardians to trade Jose Ramirez? The week in baseballSo far the Indians have resisted trading All-Star third baseman and the face of the franchise, Jose Ramirez.

Jose Barrero - Dealing with left wrist sorenessManager David Bell said Saturday that Barrero hasn't yet appeared in a Cactus League game due to left wrist soreness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ImpactBarrero's absence sounds mainly precautionary at this point, and Bell said that the 23-year-old will be re-evaluated in the coming days. Once he's fully healthy, he should see increased opportunities for playing time after the Reds traded Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners on Monday.

Nolan Jones - Beginning baseball activitiesJones (ankle) is set to begin baseball activities but has not been cleared to play, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ImpactJones underwent ankle surgery in September after suffering a high-ankle sprain. He's a little bit behind the expected pace, but it's not clear if he'll miss Triple-A Columbus' Opening Day. He'll need to take a step up in 2022 after finishing last year with a .238/.356/.431 slash line, 13 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 48 RBI and 60 runs scored in 407 plate appearances. If he receives his call-up this season, he'd likely get a look in the outfield or at first base -- Jose Ramirez is the Guardians' everyday third baseman, which somewhat blocks Jones at his natural position.

Tyler Freeman - Will begin hitting soonFreeman (shoulder) is set to resume hitting within the next week, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ImpactFreeman is recovering from surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He has not been cleared to play games yet, but it seems he shouldn't miss too much of the minor-league season. He's expected to see most of his time at Triple-A Columbus this year after hitting .323/.372/.470 across 180 plate appearances with Double-A Akron in 2021.

Sam McWilliams - Lands with RedsMcWilliams signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Saturday, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
ImpactMcWilliams displayed potential in the minors earlier in his career but struggled at the Triple-A level in 2021. Across 25 appearances (one start) between Syracuse and El Paso, he posted a 10.27 ERA and 2.12 WHIP in 30.2 innings. The right-hander will presumably begin the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Louisville but should be in the mix for a spot in the major-league bullpen if he can turn things around early in the season.

Rosenthal: In signing Carlos Correa, the Twins are pushing to win. There is no excuse for other teams to not do the same. Why again are the A’s and Reds tearing down? Why do the Orioles and Pirates remain so inert? Why can’t the Guardians act like the Twins?
