Lucas Sims - Throws side sessionSims (elbow) completed a side session Wednesday and plans to throw against hitters before the end of camp, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ImpactThe Reds have already confirmed the right-hander will begin the season on the injured list after dealing with elbow and back injuries over the winter, though the hope is he'll only spent the 15-day minimum on the shelf. Sims was expected to open the campaign as the favorite for save opportunities, but Art Warren, Luis Cessa and Hunter Strickland are all in the mix to close in the meantime for Cincinnati.

Trey Wingenter - Dealing with elbow sorenessWingenter was shut down from throwing with right elbow soreness Thursday and won't be ready for the start of the season, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ImpactWingenter appears to have avoided a serious injury since an MRI came back clean, but he'll still be unavailable for Opening Day. The 27-year-old is in camp as a non-roster invitee, and it's unclear whether he'll get a chance with the big-league club once healthy.

A.J. Puk - Bound for bullpenThe Athletics plan to have Puk open the season as a member of their bullpen, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ImpactDurability concerns have been the main reason why Puk has yet to make an MLB start, but after reporting to spring training healthy, he was expected to compete for a back-end spot in the Oakland rotation. At some point during the spring, the Athletics scrapped those plans, as all four of Puk's appearances to date have come as a reliever. He's tossed exactly two frames in each of his last three Cactus League appearances, a usage pattern that could signal that the Athletics envision him serving as a multi-inning fireman out of the bullpen. Though that role likely wouldn't put Puk in the mix for consistent save chances, he could have some fantasy value in deeper leagues as a ratio stabilizer if he can find a way to keep his walks in check. He hasn't shown the ability to do that so far in spring training, as he's issued six free passes over 6.2 innings.

Deolis Guerra - Receiving second opinionManager Mark Kotsay said Thursday that Guerra (forearm) will receive a second opinion, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ImpactGuerra was evaluated for forearm tightness Tuesday, but he'll get an additional diagnosis before the team determines the next steps in his recovery process. The right-hander was in line to serve as one of the team's top setup men in front of closer Lou Trivino to begin the regular season, but his early-season availability will likely depend on the results of his second examination.

Dauri Moreta - Chance to win bullpen spotMoreta has a chance to win a roster spot out of spring training in the bullpen, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He struck out the side Wednesday after the fir...
ImpactThe Reds made a handful of roster moves this week and Moreta remains as part of the bullpen mix in the wake of those moves. 2021 was a breakout campaign for the right-hander, as he compiled a whopping 59:9 K:BB over 54 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. He made his MLB debut late last season and allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk across 3.2 frames.
