Brandon Waddell - Returns from virus-related absenceWaddell made his return from Triple-A Memphis' COVID-19 injured list Friday and appeared out of the bullpen Saturday, striking out two and allowing a hit in a scoreless inning.
ImpactWaddell's relief appearance was his first with either Triple-A or St. Louis since July 9, as the 27-year-old had been shut down on two occasions due to virus-related health and safety protocols. He looks like he's healthy again as the season winds down, but Waddell's extended absence may be enough to take him out of the running for a promotion to the big club in September.

Paul DeJong - Returns to bench roleDeJong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets.
ImpactDeJong went 2-for-10 with a solo home run and a stolen base while starting in each of the Cardinals' last four games, but he'll shift back to a bench role now that top shortstop Edmundo Sosa (wrist) is back in the lineup to begin the week. So long as Sosa stays healthy the rest of the season, DeJong likely won't be in store for more than 2-to-3 starts per week.

Edmundo Sosa - Returns to starting nineSosa (wrist) will start at shortstop and bat seventh Monday against the Mets.
ImpactSosa checks back into the lineup after he was on the bench for the past four games with a sore left wrist. Before the injury surfaced, Sosa had supplanted Paul DeJong as the Cardinals' top shortstop. Dating back to Aug. 14, Sosa is slashing .371/.446/.565 with 12 runs and 12 RBI.

Génesis Cabrera - Secures 24th holdCabrera notched his 24th hold in a win over the Reds on Sunday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit and recorded two strikeouts.
ImpactThe left-hander appears to be hitting his stride again after a three-appearance stretch in late August during which he allowed nine earned runs. Cabrera has bounced back to forge four straight scoreless efforts spanning 5.1 innings, a span during which he's also recorded six strikeouts and a victory in addition Sunday's hold. As a battle-tested southpaw, Cabrera is highly likely to continue seeing higher-leverage opportunities for what remains of the regular season.

Luis García - Continues thriving SundayGarcia recorded his eighth hold in a win over the Reds on Sunday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts over one inning.
ImpactGarcia continues to serve as a highly reliable relief option for manager Mike Shildt, now having forged 21 consecutive scoreless appearances. The veteran right-hander has seven of his eight holds on the season over that span as well, and he's now coaxed his previously bloated ERA and WHIP down to 2.16 and 0.88, respectively.

Edmundo Sosa - Sees at-bats as in-game replacementSosa (wrist) entered Sunday's win over the Reds as a defensive replacement at shortstop and subsequently went 0-for-2.
ImpactSosa's blanking at the plate pales in relevance to the fact the ailing infielder managed to take swings in game action again after missing the previous four contests with wrist pain. Assuming he has no residual effects from Sunday's activity, Sosa, who'd opened September hitting .364 (8-for-22) over his first seven games of the month, could be back in the starting lineup Monday against the Mets.
