ImpactBell previously intimated the veteran left-hander could be delayed to begin the season due to some shoulder soreness, so it's not a major surprise Minor will end up on the shelf. There's no specific available for his return, though Bell also said he expects Minor to be ready "sometime in April." Luis Castillo (shoulder) will also open on the IL, which provides prospects Hunter Green and Nick Lodolo an improved chance of being in the Opening Day rotation.

Reports from last week indicated that he might have a tough time getting ready by Opening Day, and that's now been officially confirmed. His absence, as well as the absence of Mike Minor (shoulder), could give rookies Hunter Greene or Nick Lodolo the chance to break camp in the rotation.

ImpactIf that last spot comes down to Greene vs. Lodolo, Greene has an advantage by being on the 40-man roster. However, it's possible that both pitchers make it, as only the top two spots in the rotation are currently settled with both Luis Castillo and Mike Minor not ready for Opening Day. "Sanmartin gives us great flexibility because he can be a starter," manager David Bell said. "He could potentially also be a reliever. We don't have a lot of left-handed options in the bullpen. It's nice to have the ability to do either, depending on how everything else shakes out."
