Tarik Skubal - Completes 15-pitch side session Skubal (elbow) tossed a 15-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Impact Skubal threw exclusively fastballs during the session, which marked his first time taking part in mound work in nearly nine months after he underwent flexor tendon surgery last August. After opening the season on the 60-day injured list, Skubal won't be eligible to make his 2023 debut until May 29, but the Tigers haven't provided a firm target date for him to be activated. A clearer timeline for his debut could come into focus once he completes several more side sessions and faces live hitters in batting practice before advancing to what will likely be a multi-start minor-league rehab assignment.

There are still plenty of rough edges to his game -- even with basestealing made easier by MLB's rule changes, he's gone just 3-for-7 on steal attempts so far in 2023 -- but with Austin Meadows (personal) still away from the team, Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) on the IL and Akil Baddoo producing a tepid .644 OPS, Vierling appears to be Detroit's best corner-outfield option right now.

Matthew Boyd - Stumbles in nightcap Saturday Boyd (1-2) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, surrendering six runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out three.

Impact Detroit jumped on the veteran southpaw for four runs in the second inning before a two-run homer by light-hitting Ryan McKenna in the sixth chased Boyd from the game. It's the first time in five starts this season he's given up more than three runs, but Boyd is beginning to have trouble keeping the ball in the yard, as he's served up four home runs in his last 15.2 innings. He'll take a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB through 24.2 frames into his next outing, which could come next weekend in St. Louis.

Zack Short - Pops first homer of year Short went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles.

Impact Called up Saturday morning to be the 27th man on the roster for the twin bill, Short got the start at his namesake position and batted ninth in the matinee. The 27-year-old rose to the occasion, taking DL Hall deep in the eighth inning for his first big-league homer since August of 2021, and after Short came off the bench in the nightcap to draw a walk and score a run, Detroit rewarded him by keeping him in the majors and sending Tyler Nevin back to Triple-A Toledo in his place. Short isn't going to unseat Javier Baez, but he could carve out a utility role -- in 21 games for Toledo prior to his promotion, he saw action at second base, center field and left field in addition to his natural position at shortstop.

Impact The right-hander made things interesting as he needed 23 pitches (15 strikes) to protect a 7-4 lead, but Lange eventually struck out Ryan Mountcastle to end the matinee. Lange hasn't been tagged with a run in eight straight appearances, posting a 13:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings over that stretch, and while Jason Foley has also been effective in a high-leverage role for Detroit, Lange appears to be tightening his hold on the closer job.
