Grabbed by Pirates Allen was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Impact Allen should in theory have a clearer path to playing time in Pittsburgh than he did in New York. It's far from guaranteed that he earns regular at-bats, however, as he's a lifetime .241/.307/.348 hitter in 666 trips to the plate whose defense doesn't grade out particularly well in center field despite his speed.

Impact Allen's skill set makes him a good fit for a bench role in the postseason, as he's well-suited to serve as a pinch runner or defensive replacement. He's unlikely to have much of a role at the plate, as his 140 wRC+ in a small sample of 48 plate appearances this season doesn't line up with his career wRC+ of 76.

Heads to minors The Yankees returned Allen to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Wednesday's game against the Orioles.

Impact Allen had been serving as a replacement player amidst the Yankees' small COVID-19 outbreak, so the move suggests somebody has been cleared to return from the COVID-related injured list. The 28-year-old outfielder has gotten on base at a .417 clip in 15 games with New York, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the big-league club if injuries or the virus create a roster opening at some point.
