Week away from mound work Woodford (shoulder) is at least a week away from throwing off a mound, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Impact Woodford should soon resume throwing on flat ground, but the Cardinals are slow-playing his recovery from a bout of right shoulder inflammation. He was placed on the injured list May 5, two days after losing his spot in the starting rotation. The 26-year-old figures to return as a long reliever whenever he's fit again for MLB action.

Placed on 15-day IL Woodford was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Impact Woodford lost his rotation spot Thursday and is now also off the active 26-man roster as he works through a bout of shoulder trouble. The 26-year-old right-hander leaves behind a 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 30 innings of work this season for St. Louis.

Impact Adam Wainwright (groin) is expected to come off the injured list to fill the vacant rotation spot Saturday against the Tigers. Woodford has struggled to a 5.72 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB through 28.1 innings (six starts) this season for St. Louis.

While it is early, these are positive developments for Woodford, who had a fairly mediocre 4.5 K/9 across 48.1 big-leagues innings last season. He also maintained a 2.23 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while working as a multi-inning reliever. The competition for a rotation spot is crowded, which means he'll likely have to settle for a bullpen role again, though that decision isn't expected to come until much closer to the start of the regular season.
