GAME LOG

INJURIES

Overwhelmed by Rockies Suarez (4-4) took the loss against Colorado on Tuesday, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four.
Impact The left-hander's outing got off a to a poor start when a pair of Angels errors in the first inning led to two Rockies runs. He gave up a solo homer in the third frame before another error catalyzed two more Colorado scores. Suarez couldn't blame his defense in the fourth inning, when he allowed three of the four batters he faced to reach base, and all three came around to score. Suarez has now surrendered four earned runs in consecutive contests, somewhat souring a three-game stretch from June 28 to July 11 during which he yielded four total runs over 13.1 innings. He's tentatively lined up to start next Monday's game at Texas.
JULY 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Tagged for four runs Suarez (4-3) was charged with the loss against the A's on Tuesday after allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four across 5.2 innings.
Impact Suarez held the A's to a single run across the first five frames via a solo homer by Matt Olson. The southpaw eventually unraveled in the sixth, allowing three more runs including a two-run double to Ramon Laureano. The 23-year-old didn't quite stretch out as far as his season-high 88 pitches last time out, tossing 73 this time around, including 49 for strikes. Suarez will take a 2.85 ERA and 1.12 WHIP into his next projected start Monday against Colorado.
JULY 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Earns win Sunday Suarez (4-2) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings as he picked up a win over the Mariners on Sunday.
Impact The only run Suarez allowed came on a sacrifice fly from Ty France after the left-hander allowed back-to-back singles to open up the bottom half of the first. He settled in nicely afterward, not allowing another baserunner to reach second over the next four innings. Suarez threw a season-high 88 pitches after throwing 75 pitches his last time out as he continues to build up his arm strength and stamina. He now owns a 2.04 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 35.1 innings and should be on fantasy owners' radars in mixed and AL-only leagues.
JULY 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Lasts just three innings Monday Suarez (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three over three innings as he took the loss against the Red Sox on Monday.
Impact Suarez had some trouble locating the strike zone, throwing just 45 of his 75 pitches for strikes while walking a season-high four batters. It was quite a disappointing outing for the 23-year-old after he threw 5.1 strong innings of relief last Monday. He now owns a 2.37 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB over 30.1 innings and lines up to start in Seattle over the weekend.

Suarez scheduled to start for Los Angeles against Boston

The Angels will roll out Jose Suarez to the mound Monday and the Red Sox will give Martin Perez the start
JULY 5, 2021 • Associated Press
Joining rotation Suarez will pitch out of the rotation going forward, starting Monday against Boston, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
Impact Suarez has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season but should be stretched out to start, as he threw 5.1 innings in relief of Dylan Bundy (illness) on Monday. He'll now get the chance to take Bundy's spot on a permanent basis. The young lefty has looked good in 27.1 innings of relief this year, striking out a league-average 23.9 percent of opposing batters while producing a 50.7 percent groundball rate, helping him to a 1.98 ERA.
JULY 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sharp in long-relief outing Suarez (3-1) allowed one run on two hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out five and earning a win over the Yankees.
Impact Suarez entered the game in the second inning after Dylan Bundy (illness) was removed. The lone blemish on his outing was a solo shot off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth. It was reported Monday that Suarez could eventually move into the starting rotation this season and he certainly helped his case, lowering his ERA to 1.98 with his longest outing of the season.
JUNE 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could move into rotation Angels manager Joe Maddon said Sunday that Suarez could be moved into the rotation at some point this season, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
Impact After an ugly showing in the 2020 campaign during which he gave up 10 runs in just 2.1 innings, Suarez has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround this season, posting a 2.05 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB across 22 innings out of the bullpen. The left-hander credits his success in part to better conditioning, and he explained through an interpreter that he "lost a lot of weight" in the offseason. His strong campaign has opened the eyes of Maddon and others in the organization to the point that a move to the rotation is a strong possibility. "We've talked about how he could help us this year," Maddon said. "We believe that, no question. That's definitely on the horizon. We've been trying to utilize him in different moments and keep him kind of stretched out so that when we do choose to do something like that, it's not gonna be a great add on regarding his workload regarding number of pitches. But everybody pretty much believes the same thing: that this guy is going to be a starter."
JUNE 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Earns win Sunday Suarez (2-0) took the win against Oakland on Sunday, pitching three scoreless and hitless innings. He allowed one walk and struck out four.
Impact Starter Jose Quintana was forced out of the game after three innings due to a shoulder injury, leaving Suarez to protect a 4-2 lead. The southpaw thrived in the opportunity, allowing only one baserunner (on a seventh-inning walk) while striking out four. He has yielded only two earned runs over nine innings on the season.
MAY 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled by Angels Suarez was recalled by the Angels on Friday.
Impact Suarez was sent to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, and he made a minor-league start Tuesday. During that outing, he allowed two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. The southpaw will now return to the major-league bullpen after right-hander Aaron Slegers was sent down in a corresponding move.
MAY 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Suarez was optioned Saturday to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Impact Suarez returns to the minor leagues after serving as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader, when he allowed a home run and struck out three in two innings of work. The lefty does appear to be the top bullpen option available in Triple-A and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him called up again this season.
MAY 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled as 27th man Suarez was recalled by the Angels to serve as the 27th man in Thursday's doubleheader against the Twins.
Impact Suarez spent just over a week with Triple-A Salt Lake but will now return to the major-league bullpen on a temporary basis. The southpaw allowed a run on five hits and three walks while striking out one in four innings during his lone major-league appearance this season.
MAY 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Salt Lake Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.
Impact Suarez allowed just one run on five hits in four innings of relief work Monday against the Astros, picking up the win in his season debut. The Angels need fresh arms in the bullpen, however, so he'll head to the minors with Jaime Barria joining the team in a corresponding move.
MAY 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up win behind opener Suarez (1-0) was credited with the win in Monday's 5-4 victory over the Astros after allowing one run on five hits and three walks over four-plus innings of relief. He struck out o...
Impact It was far from a dominant outing for the lefty in his season debut, but he gave the Angels a chance to mount a comeback after opener Junior Guerra dug them into an early hole. Suarez tossed 40 of 72 pitches for strikes, so he won't be available to pitch again for a few days, potentially making him a candidate to be optioned back down to Triple-A Salt Lake. If he sticks around, Suarez would need multiple injuries in the Angels' the rotation to have a chance at starting.
MAY 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could fill bulk role Suarez will follow Junior Guerra out of the bullpen Monday against the Astros, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact It's unclear if this is a traditional opener and follower setup, as the Angels haven't specified exactly how many innings Guerra is supposed to pitch. Suarez has made 17 starts and four relief appearances thus far in his big-league career but hasn't had much success, struggling to a 7.99 ERA and 6.95 FIP.

MAY 9, 2021 • MLB.COM
Activated, could make spot start The Angels recalled Suarez from Triple-A Salt Lake ahead of Sunday's game against the Dodgers.
Impact According to J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News, Angels manager Joe Maddon said Suarez is "here to help" out of the bullpen in Sunday's series finale, but look for the skipper to stay away from the lefty if starter Jose Quintana isn't chased from the game early. With Alex Cobb (finger) moving to the 10-day injured list Saturday, the Angels will have an opening in the rotation for Monday's game in Houston. Suarez, who had been stretched out for starting duty at Triple-A, would make for a logical choice to get the nod Monday if he isn't needed in relief Sunday.
MAY 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returned to 40-man roster Suarez was activated from the injured list Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact Suarez had been on the injured list at the team's alternate training site for an undisclosed reason. He'll likely stay at the alternate site rather than move to the big-league bullpen, but his re-addition to the roster ensures that he won't be exposed to waivers. Suarez has struggled immensely in his time as a big leaguer, but he was once among the organization's top pitching prospects, so there is still hope that he can turn things around and contribute to the big club at some point.
APRIL 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to minor-league camp Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday.
Impact Suarez was being stretched out as a starter this spring while also serving as a bullpen option, but he'll begin the regular season in the minors. The southpaw made three relief appearances during Cactus League play and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over 4.2 innings. Although Suarez hasn't had much success in the majors early in his career, he could serve as a versatile option for the Angels if the team's pitching staff deals with injuries this season.
MARCH 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Being stretched out as starter Suarez is being stretched out as a starter during spring training and is also being looked at as a bullpen option, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact Suarez has struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings thus far in Cactus League play, though he has also allowed five baserunners and two runs. The southpaw is a longshot for a rotation role to open the campaign, so he could start the season in the big-league bullpen or as a starter in the minors. Suarez hasn't had much success as a major-leaguer so far, posting a 7.99 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 83.1 innings, primarily as a starter.
MARCH 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down by Angels Suarez was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Tuesday.
Impact Suarez (0-2) started the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros but was charged with the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over one inning. As a result, he'll attempt to right the ship at alternate camp. Right-hander Luke Bard was recalled in a corresponding move.
AUGUST 25, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Receiving another start Suarez is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Astros, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact Suarez had an inauspicious 2020 debut last Thursday against the Giants, recording only four outs while surrendering five runs on five hits and a walk. Though Julio Teheran was more effective while covering five innings of mop-up duty behind Suarez, Angels manager Joe Maddon with give the 22-year-old lefty at least one more chance to redeem himself. Suarez's poor results last week to go along with the tough road matchup with the Astros probably make it best to avoid him as a streaming option.
AUGUST 24, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in season debut Suarez (0-1) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Giants. He allowed five runs on five hits and one walk across 1.1 innings, and he didn't strike out anyone.
Impact Suarez had a golden opportunity to stake a claim to a rotation spot following Julio Teheran's move to the bullpen, but he wasn't able to take advantage of the chance and only recorded four outs before being lifted. This wasn't how the 22-year-old lefty envisioned his season debut going. Given his struggles, it remains to be seen whether he will get the chance to make another start anytime soon.
