Impact This was the second straight time that Allard has entered a game following starter Dane Dunning. The Rangers had been using Taylor Hearn as the left-handed complement to Dunning in what has been and will continue to be a tandem spot in the rotation. Texas does not want Dunning throwing too many innings over the course of the season. Allard has been a pleasant surprise thus far, allowing two earned runs, walking one and striking out 15 over 10 innings (five appearances). He was a minor-league starter and made 18 starts in MLB prior to 2021, so there could be an opportunity for Allard to enter the rotation at some point.

Impact Allard entered for starter Dane Dunning, who was chased by his former team after allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over 2.2 innings. The Rangers want to manage Dunning's innings and have paired him with a long reliever in a tandem situation, and this was the first time Allard pitched with him. Typically, the starter lasts longer than 2.2 innings. Taylor Hearn had been paired with Dunning while Wes Benjamin also filled a similar role with Jordan Lyles, but Allard has been the best of the lot early on and should operate as a multi-inning reliever for whichever starter needs assistance. The left-hander sports a 2.45 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 11 strikeouts and zero walks over 7.1 innings.

Impact The Rangers optioned Benjamin on Saturday after he served as a tandem starter behind Lyles to open the season. Lyles has pitched into the sixth inning in two of three starts, so he's not far from being a traditional starter. It's unclear how much Allard would need to pitch when it's Lyles' turn -- Benjamin threw 5.2 innings over three tandem appearances. The left-handed Allard was barely used over the first 11 days of the season but has been perfect in two outings this past week, fanning eight over four innings.

There's also a strategic benefit, per the manager. "You've got to have opposite arms, obviously, with one guy throwing two-seamers this way and another guy throwing 97 this way. Just matching them up the best way possible. I think this is something we're definitely talking about."
