Allen tossed five scoreless innings while striking out seven in Friday's spring win over the Rockies, while right-hander Cal Quantrill only threw one inning in relief. Allen has made four spring appearances (two starts) and has posted a 0.64 ERA and 18:3 K:BB in 14 innings.

Pitches in 'B' Game Allen gave up two runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 4.2 innings in a "B" game Saturday against the Mariners, MLB.com reports.

Impact Meanwhile Cal Quantrill struggled by giving up six runs in his spring start against the White Sox. However, Quantrill was given the major-league start, so he could still be seen ahead in the competition for a rotation spot. Allen has outperformed Quantrill in the battle for the fifth starter role by allowing one run in nine innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk in major-league games. Still, Cleveland may not decide the final rotation spot until the final week of spring training.

Impact Allen is battling for one of Cleveland's final two rotation spots, and so far he has been hard to overlook. Per Joe Noga of Cleveland.com, Allen came to camp in much better shape than in previous years, supposedly shedding 35 pounds over the offseason. His slider has been the key to his success this spring, as it has been more crisp than in prior years thanks to a new grip, and has been a major problem thus far for right-handed hitters. Cleveland has not tipped its hand, but the expectation is that Triston McKenzie will be the No. 4 starter while Allen and Cal Quantrill compete for the final spot. Allen has had better results than Quantrill, but Quantrill had a better track record prior to this small Cactus League sample.
