Solid in last start Castillo (personal) allowed a run on six hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Friday.

Impact The right-hander was strong in his last start of the season, and he also recorded Cincinnati's only hit against Pittsburgh starter Wil Crowe. Castillo gave up just 10 runs (eight earned) across 30.2 innings in his last five starts this year. An ugly start to the year left his ratios a little bloated with a 3.98 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 192:75 K:BB across 187.2 innings, but he was able to finish strong. The 28-year-old is a free agent this offseason.

Activated by Reds Castillo (personal) was activated from the family medical emergency list Thursday.

Impact Castillo will start Friday's game against the Pirates, and he'll rejoin the active roster a day before the matchup. The right-hander has posted quality starts in each of his last two appearances and has recorded a 1.46 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 12.1 innings during that time.

Returning Friday Castillo will return from the bereavement list to start Friday against Pittsburgh, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Impact The Reds will likely have little to play for at that point, as a single loss by them or a single win by the Cardinals over the final week will eliminate them from playoff contention. Castillo himself has something to play for, however, as he can drag his ERA under 4.00 if he throws at least five innings while giving up no more than one run or at least seven innings while giving up no more than two. That's not much of an achievement for a pitcher of Castillo's talent level, but it would be quite an impressive feat for a pitcher who ended May with a 7.22 ERA.

Impact Cincinnati had been listing Castillo as its probable starter for Tuesday's series opener against the White Sox in Chicago, but his availability for final week of the regular season is now in question following his deactivation. The team has yet to provide a timeline on Castillo's return to the roster, but he won't be eligible to rejoin the 28-man active roster for at least the next three days. Cincinnati called up Reiver Sanmartin from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Pirates, and he could pick up a second turn through the rotation over the weekend in Pittsburgh if Castillo isn't activated by then.

Impact Castillo surrendered a solo home run to Juan Soto in the sixth inning and he didn't receive any run support from his offense. After struggling for much of the season, Castillo is averaging less than two runs allowed per start over his last seven outings. The 28-year-old has a 4.05 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 187 punchouts in 182.1 innings this season.

Impact The two teams will make up the contest next Monday, the lone mutual off day remaining in their respective 2021 schedules. In light of the postponement, expect Cincinnati to simply move all members of its five-man rotation back a day in the pitching schedule. Castillo will line up to make his next start in Thursday's series opener versus the Nationals at home.

Dominant against Dodgers Castillo (8-15) came up huge against the Dodgers on Friday night, shutting them out over 6.1 innings. He struck out 10 in the game while giving up five hits and issuing two walks.

Impact The fact that Castillo did this against the Dodgers, and with the Dodgers having Walker Buehler on the mound, makes this outing even more impressive. Castillo's ERA dropped to 4.08 on the season with this outing. He'll have a chance to bring that mark below 4.00 in his next outing.

Impact The right-hander was staked to a four-run lead after three innings, but the Cardinals touched him up for a pair of runs in each of the third and sixth frames to erase the deficit. Castillo's streak of five straight quality starts was consequently snapped, though he did tie his season-high mark by completing seven innings. The 28-year-old hasn't taken a loss since Aug. 14, and he has brought an ERA that stood at 7.61 after 10 starts this season down to a respectable 4.24. Castillo's next outing is tentatively scheduled for Friday at home against the Dodgers.

Impact The only damage Minnesota mustered against Castillo was a first-inning home run by Jorge Polanco. With Wednesday's performance, the righty has a 5-2 record, 1.94 ERA and 10 quality starts in 12 outings since the beginning of June. On May 29, Castillo had taken his seventh consecutive loss and had an ERA of 7.22. Though it took a couple months for him to get there, the 28-year-old has blossomed into the dominant ace he was expected to be this season. Castillo will bring a 4.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into his next start Monday in Cleveland.
