Likely to get call-up Wednesday The Tigers are expected to call Manning up from Triple-A Toledo to start Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Impact Before being optioned to Toledo prior to the All-Star break, Manning was lit up over his first five big-league starts, posting a 6.95 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 22 innings. Despite the discouraging results, Manning looks like he'll have a decent amount of leash at the back of the Detroit rotation due to the team's lack of healthy starters. Jose Urena (groin) joined Matthew Boyd (triceps), Spencer Turnbull (forearm) and Julio Teheran (shoulder) on the injured list Saturday, and none of the four appear close to a return.

Impact Contrary to initial reports, Manning's demotion was simply to add a bullpen arm in Derek Holland for the last two games before the break. Having pitched Friday, Manning was going to be unavailable Saturday and Sunday anyway.

Impact The lack of walks is nice, but it was otherwise a forgettable outing for Manning, who gave up both a two-run home run and a three-run bomb. The rookie was better in his first two MLB starts, allowing a total of four runs across 10.2 innings, so this just looks like part of the learning curve that young pitchers go through. Manning still has loads of potential, and he'll look for better results in his next scheduled appearance Sunday against the White Sox.
